Abandon Ship
SecondShot Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I've got a list of pros and cons I made last year
It's never been a help for me to choose
It's dated on the bottom to dictate when it was made
To see how long I'd handled the abuse

All set to rest on self-inflated laurels
Which in itself could prove
That there's little left to do
All covered black and blue
It's time to accept what I always knew

I'm washing all of this away
I'm washing all of this away
I'm washing all of this away

There's never been a better view or better place to sit
Than on shore washing this abandoned, sinking ship
Maybe it's age
Maybe it's taste
But I never cared enough

I could never care enough
I'll leave it there

Overall Meaning

In "Abandon Ship," SecondShot's lead singer reflects on his past and the choices he's made. He begins by describing a list of pros and cons that he made last year, but he admits that it was never helpful in making decisions. The date on the bottom of the paper indicates how long he's been dealing with this internal struggle. Although he had been trying to rest on his accomplishments, he realizes that he has little left to do. He's bruised and battered, and it's time to accept what he's always known.

The chorus brings a sense of release as he sings: "I'm washing all of this away." He repeats this line three times, emphasizing the importance of letting go of the past. He describes the feeling of being on shore, watching an abandoned and sinking ship, and realizing that he's in a better place. Maybe it's because of his age or taste, but he never cared enough about the things that have been weighing him down. He ends the song by leaving it all behind.
