Second Chance
Second Chance - Shinedown Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

My eyes are open wide
By the way, I made it through the day
I watch the world outside
By the way, I'm leaving out today

I just saw Halley's Comet, she waved
Said why you always running in place
Even the man in the moon disappeared
Somewhere in the stratosphere

Tell my mother, tell my father
I've done the best I can
To make them realize, this is my life
I hope they understand
I'm not angry, I'm just saying
Sometimes goodbye is a second chance

Please don't cry one tear for me
I'm not afraid of what I have to say
This is my one and only voice
So listen close, it's only for today

I just saw Halley's Comet, she waved
Said why you always running in place
Even the man in the moon disappeared
Somewhere in the stratosphere

Tell my mother, tell my father
I've done the best I can
To make them realize, this is my life
I hope they understand
I'm not angry, I'm just saying
Sometimes goodbye is a second chance

Here is my chance
This is my chance

Tell my mother, tell my father
I've done the best I can
To make them realize, this is my life
I hope they understand
I'm not angry, I'm just saying
Sometimes goodbye is a second chance

Sometimes goodbye is a second chance
Sometimes goodbye is a second chance

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Shinedown's song Second Chance speak about making a decision to leave something (or someone) behind and move forward. The opening lines convey a sense of clarity in the singer's mind after having made it through a difficult day. The mention of watching the world outside and leaving out today indicates a change in place or situation.

The singer then speaks about seeing Halley's Comet and the comet waving at them, a possible metaphor for a divine sign or inspiration. The lyrics then question why the singer has been "running in place" and why even the man in the moon has disappeared - suggesting that the singer is tired of being stuck in one place and needs to make a change.

The song then takes a turn as the singer addresses their parents and tells them that they have done their best, and that this is their life. They hope for understanding, and the singer emphasizes that they are not angry but just letting go. The chorus repeats the idea that sometimes saying goodbye is a second chance, which could mean that sometimes leaving something behind can open up opportunities for growth, change, and new beginnings.

Overall, Second Chance is a powerful song about making difficult decisions, taking risks, and moving forward. It encourages listeners to take control of their lives and to find the courage to say goodbye when necessary.

@DriftingDraftsman

I love this song.

Sometimes you need separation to improve your relationships.

Feel this with Family, and Friends turned roommates.

It's such a shame, because there is so much love, somehow corrupted by frustration.

But with that space, you grow an understanding of yourself, and a deeper appreciation of those connections.

My husband passed away on the 6th. His organs were taken for donations 3 days later and the surgeon listened to Shinedown during the procedures because my husband loved them and most especially this song. His funeral is in the morning.
