Broken
Secondhand Serenade Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

In the moonlight
Your face it glows
Like a thousand diamonds
I suppose
And your hair flows like

The ocean breeze
Not a million fights
Could make me hate you
You're invincible
Yeah, It's true
It's in your eyes
Where I find peace

Is it broken?
Can we work it out?
Let's light up the town, scream out loud!
Is it broken?
Can we work it out?
I can see in your eyes
You're ready to break
Don't look away.

So here we are now
In a place where
The sun blended
With the ocean thin.
So thin, we stand

Across from each other
Together we'll wonder
If we will last these days
If I asked you to stay
Would you tell me
You would be mine?

And time
Is all I ask for
Time
I just need one more day
And time

You've been crying too long
Time
And your tears wrote this song
Stay

In the moonlight
Your face it glows

Is it broken?
Can we work it out?
Let's light up the town, scream out loud!
Is it broken?
Can we work it out?
I can see in your eyes

You're ready to break
Don't look away.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Secondhand Serenade's "Broken" describe a relationship in turmoil, with the singer pleading with their partner to stay and work things out. The first verse paints a vivid picture of the person's beauty, using natural elements like the moonlight, diamonds, and ocean breeze to describe their appearance. The second verse takes place in a place where the sun meets the ocean, and the singer wonders if the relationship will last. They ask if the person will stay with them and express their desire for more time to make things work.

The chorus is a plea for the couple to work things out, with the singer acknowledging that they can see their partner is ready to give up but urging them not to look away. The repetition of the question "Is it broken?" emphasizes the uncertainty and the hope that the relationship can be salvaged. The final verse brings the focus back to the present moment, with the singer promising to stay and support their partner through their tears and asking for just a little more time.

One possible interpretation of the lyrics is that the couple is having communication issues and struggling to connect. The bridge ("And time/Is all I ask for") suggests that the singer believes that things can get better if they just have more time to work things out. The last line, "Stay," is a simple plea for the person to not leave and gives the song a sense of urgency.

When I was younger, I didn't understand how this kind of music would make any person cry. I know, the lyrics are cute and sad etc. And now, after my first long relationship broke up, I just come back to this place. The place of music, which can speak the words out my heart can not say. And I'm crying. I'm literally crying and I can now understand how beautiful it is to find someone, who knows your pain and can turn it into a way, you can enjoy it. Thanks for this kind of calming music. I need this right now, although we broke up 10 days ago wasted 5 years and 15 days, and I'm still not over it

Honestly, no relationship is a waste. Maybe 5 years later you see that. Maybe not.
