It was the first and only time to date that a predominantly instrumental piece has won the Eurovision Song Contest, although a few Norwegian language lyrics were included to ensure that the entry adhered to the contest's rules. In addition Rolf Løvland also co-wrote the song La det swinge (Let it swing) that secured Norway its first Eurovision Song Contest victory in 1985.
Their success at Eurovision spearheaded the success of their first album Songs from a Secret Garden. It sold a million copies around the world going platinum in Norway and Korea, gold in Ireland, Hong Kong and New Zealand and spending two years in the Billboard New Age charts in 1996 and 1997. Barbara Streisand adapted Heartstrings from this album as the song I've Dreamed Of You on her A Love Like Ours album. She also used Heartstrings in her wedding to James Brolin.

I don't know just how, but it's not over till you've won
When you see the strom is comin
See the lighnin part the skies
It's to late to run
there's terror in your eyes.
What you do then is rmeber this old thing you heard me say
"It's this strom, not you, that's bound to blow away."
Hold on to someone standin by.
HOLD ON!
Don't even ask how long or why
Chile, hold on to what you know is true,
hold on till you get through
CHILD, OH CHILD!
Hold on...
When you feel you're face is boiling
fear a devils' at your door
there's no place to hide
you're frozen to the floor
What you do then is you tell yourself that it'll be ok
"It's this dream, not me, that's bound to go away"
HOLD ON!
hold on the night will soon be by
HOLD ON!
And think of something else to try
hold theres angels on their way
hold on and hear them say
"CHILD, OH CHILD!"
and it doesn't even matter
if the danger and the doom
come from up above,
or down below,
or just come flying at you from across the room
When you see a man who's ragin
and he's jealous and he fears
that you've walked through walls he's hid behind for years.
What you do then is you tell yourself to hold on out, you say
"Its this day, not me, that bound to go away"
It's this day
NOT ME!
That's bound to go...
A-WAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The lyrics of Secret Garden's song "Hold On" are about perseverance and resilience amidst difficult times. When faced with challenges and fear, the song encourages the listener to hold on to what they know is true and to keep pushing forward because the storm will eventually pass. The storm is used as a metaphor for various obstacles in life that one might encounter, be it personal or external. In the face of adversity, the song advises to hold on to someone standing by, or to think of something else to try, and most importantly, to hold on until you get through.
The lyrics also draw from the idea that sometimes our own fears and doubts can be more intimidating than the actual challenge at hand. The line "It's this storm, not you, that's bound to blow away" suggests that it's easy to get caught up in our anxieties and to forget that the obstacle itself is temporary. The song uses repetitive phrases such as "hold on" and "child, oh child" to create a sense of urgency and comfort, and to reinforce the message of resilience and perseverance.
An interesting fact about the song is that it was originally written for the film "Jerry Maguire" but ended up not being used in the final cut. Instead, it was released on Secret Garden's album "White Stones" in 1997. Another interesting fact is that "Hold On" was covered by the American R&B group Wilson Phillips in 2004 for their album "California". The song has also been used in various television shows and films, including "The West Wing" and "Michael Clayton". Additionally, the song won the 1997 International Song of the Year at the Korea Pop Music Festival.

What you've got to do is
Finish what you have begun,
I don't know just how,
But it's not over 'til you've won!
When you see the storm is coming,
See the lightning part the skies,
It's too late to run-
There's terror in your eyes!
What you do then is remember
This old thing you heard me say:
"It's the storm, not you,
That's bound to blow away."
Hold on,
Hold on to someone standing by.
Hold on.
Don't even ask how long or why!
Child, hold on to what you know is true,
Hold on 'til you get through.
Child, oh child!
Hold on!
When you feel your heart is poundin',
Fear a devil's at your door.
There's no place to hide-
You're frozen to the floor!
What you do then is you force yourself
To wake up, and you say:
"It's this dream, not me,
that's bound to go away."
Hold on,
Hold on, the night will soon be by.
Hold on,
Until there's nothing left to try.
Child, hold on, There's angels on their way!
