You Raise Me Up
Secret Garden & Brian Kennedy Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When I am down and, oh my soul, so weary
When troubles come and my heart burdened be
Then, I am still and wait here in the silence
Until you come and sit awhile with me

You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders
You raise me up, to more than I can be

You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders
You raise me up, to more than I can be

There is no life no life without its hunger
Each restless heart beats so imperfectly
But when you come and I am filled with wonder
Sometimes, I think I glimpse eternity

You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas
And I am strong, when I am on your shoulders

You raise me up, to more than I can be
You raise me up, to more than I can be

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Secret Garden and Brian Kennedy's "You Raise Me Up" describe the comfort and strength that comes from having someone to lean on during difficult times. The opening verse paints a picture of a person who is feeling down and burdened by their troubles, yet they find solace in waiting for their companion to come and sit with them in silence. This person provides the emotional support and upliftment needed to help the singer feel strong again, even in the face of life's greatest challenges.

The chorus of the song is an uplifting affirmation of this sense of support, as the singer is "raised up" to stand on mountains and walk on stormy seas. This imagery conjures feelings of resilience and determination, suggesting that with the support of this person, the singer can overcome any obstacle. The final verse adds a sense of wonder to this dynamic, suggesting that this person not only provides emotional strength but also allows the singer to glimpse the transcendent and eternal.

In my view this is THE BEST performance of 'You Raise Me Up'. Written by Norwegian composer Rolf Løvland, life recorded with Fionnuala Sherry and sung in the most sensitive and powerful way by Norwegian perfect casting to this song - Espen Grjotheim.and his perfect female counterpart casting Tracy Campbell.

In my perception, this peak performance is without beyond anything to compare it with and  stands superior in its greatness comparable only to the breathtaking beauty of Norwegian nature so beautifully captured by many of the wonderfully written and composed concert pieces of heavenly music of Secret Garden.

I LOVE THIS MUSIC.

Thank you Fionnuala Sherry and Rolf Løvland the heart of Secret Garden together with Espen Grjotheim and Tracy Campbell Nations.

Cordial greetings

That opening violin sound gave me absolute goosebumps and I don't know for how long I cried remembering my mom. She raised me up as a single parent after losing my dad to suicide. And she raised me up to be good, to be brave, and to be kind. Oh, how I miss her.
One of the most beautifully poignant songs ever written. We all feel something listening to this masterpiece
