Flying
Seize The Day Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I have a friend, who lives in Bantry Bay,
His lover lives 400 miles away,
So far by ferry, bus and train. It takes all day

He knows flying is a climate crime,
But he doesn't have the money and he doesn't have the time,
When it`s cheaper to fly than to park at the airport.
What would you do? What would you do?

Chorus:
I will recycle,
I'll use my bicycle,
I'll walk into town,
I'll turn the heating down,
I'll fill my kettle halfway,
Listen to everything else you say..
But don`t take my freedom away,
Don't take my holidays,
Don't take my time away,
Don't take my wings away...

I always thought I'd be by my sister's side,
When she gave birth to her first child,
And I'd love to see my Grandma again before she goes all the way.
Now they live so far away,
Australia and the USA,
What the hell will I say if they need me?
What would you do? What would we do?

Chorus
I will recycle,
I'll use my bicycle,
I'll walk into town,
I'll turn the heating down,
I'll fill my kettle halfway,
Listen to everything else you say..
But don`t take my freedom away,
Don't take my holidays,
Don't take my time away,
Don't take my wings away...

Spoken:
Official figures say that we need to reduce our CO2 emissions to between,
1 and 2.5 tonnes per person per year if we`re to stabilise the atmosphere.
The government, on our behalf, consumes between 1 and 2 tonnes
On street lights, hospitals and fighting wars
1 return flight to Sydney Australia produces 10 tonnes of carbon dioxide per passenger
What are you gonna do?
What am I gonna do?

I discovered so much of who I am,
Sitting in deserts in the sand,
Nothing and no-one to get in the way. No bills to pay.
I love lying in the sun and swimming in warm sea,
I don`t want to think about all the places I may never see,
Living is hard and flying is easy..
What will you do?
What will we do?

Chorus:
I will recycle,
I'll use my bicycle,
I'll walk into town,
I'll turn the heating down,
I'll wash my car with rags,
I'll never use plastic bags,
My clothes are ethically made,
I drink my tea fair-trade,
I'll offset my carbon debt,
By planting trees in Tibet,
And every 3rd world home will have an energy saving light bulb all of their own!
I'll fill my kettle halfway,
Listen to everything else you say..
But don`t take my freedom away,
Don't take my holidays,
Don't take my time away,
Don't take my wings away..

Overall Meaning

The song begins with a story of a friend who lives far away from his lover and finds it difficult to travel to see her without flying, despite knowing the impact it has on the environment. The chorus talks about the small changes one could make in their daily life to reduce their carbon footprint, but also highlights the importance of not taking away people's freedom to travel and explore the world.

The second verse discusses the personal experiences of the singer, who would like to be there for her sister's child's birth and visit her grandmother who lives far away, but flying would contribute to harmful emissions. The spoken part of the song delivers some striking facts about the carbon emissions produced by different activities, highlighting the environmental impact of flying. I have some very old seize the day on tape...passed on by a friend who was active on the 90's road protests, M65, Newbury and Manchester airport. These guys practice what they preach and have massively got my RESPECT!!!!! ;)

As an aviator and environmentalist, this song really hits home. I can only take solace in knowing that my wee plane gets much better gas milage than any SUV or minivan on the road today, but not as good as my wee Toyota Echo...soft landings!

And it came to pass that for a brief few months in the year 2020 the sky was filled buzzards, ravens swallows, the Skylark ascending, bees, dragonflies, the humble fly and the even more humble midge. The butterflies wings could be heard again as could the glorious symphony of birdsong across that vast, clear blue sky. And a cuckoo! In our wood. The first time in decades. Listen. As its call resonates in Natures natural cathedral it is drowned by the menacing approach of apocalypse now. The helicopter grinds it way low above the trees. The brief months of 2020 have passed.
