The band went through a member change at this time, Tapani left and was replaced by Emil Nikolaisen of Royal, Silver, and later Serena Maneesh. In the late Summer of 1999, Selfmindead again entered the studio to begin work on their follow up full length, At the Barricades We Fall. This album, like their previous release, was distributed in Scandinavia by Soulscape, in Europe by Sally Forth, and the US by Solidstate. During the writing process of "Barricades", Emil left to pursue other interests. Marko left his position as drummer and took up the guitar. Marko's previous place was filled by Tommy of Silver and the empty bass position was filled by Even, also of Silver. After touring as a five piece, Even and Tommy left to work more on their Silver project. After this the band began to look for more permanent members and found Håkon from a band called "mold" on bass and Michal from a broken up band called, "Amphibro". During this time the band rehearsed only once a month, due to Michal living over 700km away. Eventually they began to tour again, mostly throughout Germany and Sweden.
A tour of the US followed in 2002, but due to complications, not all the members could make it to all the dates on this tour. A reserve system was put into place to solve this problem. Upon their return home they began the writing process for their third album. During this time they released a split EP with Dutch band, The Spirit That Guides Us on Sally Forth which was distributed by Sony Music. The band played several festivals throughout Europe and played their last show at a club called "Blå" in their hometown of Eskilstuna in August of 2002. The band finally called it quits in 2003.
In 2003, Ilkka and Marco formed a new band in Norway known as Benea Reach and Timo started an Electronic project know as Tiikeri.
Into The Fire
Selfmindead Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
The fire that cleanses and heals and strengthens
The fire that will forever burn
The flame is weak in my heart To weak to maintain
The fire is fading out Turning into ashes
Relight me tonight
May the fire burn in me
I place my heart into the fire
To cleanse my soul is my desire
I place my heart into the fire
To heal my soul is my desire
Fire-burn-fire-burn
I place my heart into the fire
To strengthen my soul is my desire to burn out all the demons
To be free forever
The lyrics to Selfmindead's song "Into The Fire" represent a desire for spiritual renewal, represented by a metaphorical fire that burns in the singer's heart. The eternal flame represents a force that can cleanse, heal, and strengthen the singer, burning forever. However, the singer admits that the flame is currently weak in their heart and fading out, turning into ashes. The singer then asks for the flame to be relit tonight so that it may burn forever in them.
The second verse features a repetition of the phrase "I place my heart into the fire," which represents the singer's desire for the flames to burn away their inner demons and cleanse and heal their soul. The use of fire as a metaphor for spiritual purification is common in many cultures, but can be especially poignant for believers who see it as a symbol of God's presence or power. Ultimately, the singer desires to be free of their past and to find redemption in the flames.
