One of their advantages are the three solo singers, who present a great variety of vocal resources. Their strongest point are the guarachas, always funny, a bit hot, and with “montunos” (lively rhythm variations on the original score) that make the dance something irresistible.
Five albums recorded with Nubenegra show how the top group of Santiago de Cuba improves year by year. Their choreographies, the original repertoire, mainly composed by themselves, and the spark that appears in every song, let them return to many places where they already have performed, leaving a taste for more.
Their new album, Los Mangos Bajitos, presents 14 original new songs. No more covers! The CD makes very clear how they want the sound of their music: live, as if they were on stage.
After ten years touring Europe and America, they are not regarded any longer as the grandsons of the Buena Vista Social Club but currently called the Blues Brothers of the Son (which is quite suitable), they always have been unmistakable with their sizzling stage show. The first verse of Septeto Santiaguero's Lágrimas Negras expresses the pain of abandonment and shattered hopes after a significant other has left. Despite feeling angry and hurt, the singer chooses to bless his lover in his dreams rather than curse them with bitterness. The second verse goes deeper into the sorrow of this separation, with the singer feeling deeply the weight of the departure and crying tears as dark as his life. The chorus repeats the sentiment that despite the heartbreak, the singer cannot bear to live without his beloved and will go with her even if it means his own death.
