So true... unfortunately, cult movies don't get the credit they deserve for being good. That ending battle scene was worth the price of admission for me. I was so happy when Joss Whedon was going to direct Avengers after seeing this film in theaters.

I feel like The Operative doesn’t get enough love in terms of cinematic bad guys. He’s such a fascinating character: someone who recognizes he’s doing evil but staunchly convinced that that evil is necessary for the greater good. An absolute utilitarian taken to his logical extreme who takes no pleasure in his solemn duty, almost like a proto Thanos.

He’s also the perfect opposite to Mal: loyal to the government, the law, the status quo rather than rebelling against it; willing to hurt anyone who gets in his way no matter how innocent as opposed to Mal’s code of honor and basic empathy; filled with purpose and pursuing a mission he would die for as opposed to Mal whose only mission has always been to simply live another day (at least until the end of the movie, but then that’s the whole point).

This is absolutely brilliant writing all around. When given the chance to do what he wants, Whedon is an incredible writer.

The operative is a direct clone of Section 31 from Star Trek DS9. He would fit right in. They know they are bad guys, but they do it for a supposed noble purpose. In Section 31s case, they do evil to preserve the Federation

@KingreX32 It’s a way different thing to write a movie from scratch and direct it with mostly full creative control than to rewrite and reshoot a movie that’s already been shot. Good as he is, Whedon couldn’t pull it off. Nobody could have. It’s a fool’s errand, and now with the new cut seems to be a fully unnecessary one. I blame Whedon for his behavior on set, but not for his end product.

Not to mention the fight choreography in that Mal fights like a street thug (wrapping his head in cloth, taking wide swings) while the Operative uses the usual "trained badass" precise disabling pokes and jabs.

Mal was clearly better than the Operative expected, and was thus able to catch the Operative off guard a few times, and hold his own better than the Operative thought he would be able to, but overall, the Operative has the upper hand. It's beautifully played out in the fight choreography.

Well he reminds me of something i heard in an old podcast called the history of rome.
It was a guy doing realtively short form blurbs of the histoyyof rome. If you havent had the privilege of listening to it, you should if its still out there.
But he described the nature of why rome was able to succeed as much as it did thusly,
Rome would either be invaded or invade someone and they would get beaten. They would go home and raise an army and go back and fight some more. And they would get beaten. And they would go home and raise an army. And they would get beaten. They would go home and raise an army. They would do this until their enemy finally found themselves beaten or surrendering to the same foe they had beaten 5 or 10 times.
IOW Mal's theme song should be tubthumping because if he gets knocked down hes getting back up rinse lather repeat.

Given how long River was on board the Serenity, and how thorough and merciless he is, I doubt The Operative would have let them go just like that if they really did hand over River. He likely would have killed them and destroyed the ship, reasoning that they may have heard too much from River to just let them be.

@Adam Ladd I think it actually speaks to the operative's character: Despite the fact that he's smart & considers himself a monster, he still views himself above others, including Mal because of his background and his ideology. (In part it has been implied when he talks down to the employee he murders at the beginning of the film, which in retrospect makes it a little ironic out to call that guy out on his pride.)
He thinks he can try & figure out Mal by reading his record & play him, but within the dialogue there are hints that he underestimated him (pulse beacon, knowledge from Book etc.). He tries different tactics, attempting to anticipate his opponent's game, but it might still be annoying him regardless. - The line where he says Mal can't make him angry feels more defensive, like he's pulling himself together, so he might be a little further off his game by that point.

Mal shooting him point blank was just the wild card he didn't expect, though he did in fact already provoke well enough by that point to happen.

Neither of them was the headliner in a movie that made a billion plus dollar, or one that had the cultural impact Panther did. Remember, the only Superhero movies to make more than Black Panther were the Avengers movies themselves.

We will get a whole new character to build the next Black Panther movies around. They are going to have a hard time finding someone that can hold Boseman's jockstrap though. Boseman had so much range as an actor.

Headshots take a little longer to line up. Mal was shooting from the hip in the hopes of getting the drop on the Operative. Whether he did or not is perhaps a matter of perspective. After all, 1000s of hours of combat training won't help you if you get a bullet through the heart from a guy shooting you by surprise. It'll make you more cautious and able to accommodate those risks, but planning for everything isn't possible with limited information.

So this show had a sleeper agent, a moment where one of the heroes did not go for the head, a hero dying to save everyone else and a group of people that had to overcome their differences to survive. Not to mention some good comedy and a serious subject matter.

I think Joss Whedon had the idea for the Avengers a long time before we knew of it.

I see elements of several styles in his performance here. Most of those open hand strikes are from variants of kung fu, that spinning kick is most certainly tae kwon do or tang soo do, and the elbow strikes feel very muay thai.
