I am not an advanced pianist by any means but I want to give this a try, the middle part REALLY SCARES ME BUT ITS SO POWERFUL AND I HATE MYSELF ENOUGH wish me luck ✨💖

The whole piece is more or so difficult musically, overall the piece isn't tremendously difficult technically

How did it go?

Tim Ward

Try it! The hardest part of this piece is voicing it. The middle section is not as hard as you might think. Getting the constant 2-against-3 right takes a bit of concentration. Some awkward hand positions, common in Rachmaninoff.

The few ending notes have a 'noir' feeling that I absolutely love!
This piece was composed towards the ending of the First World War, and you can feel it.
Stunning piece and amazing interpretation!

Adalbert Ernst

Noir is absolutely right. I was also thinking this piece would fit perfectly as a soundtrack to a Hitchcock thriller.

The ending arpeggio is what we now know as the "James Bond" chord, so that's why it seems to have that feel.

The pianist's masterful deliberation brings out the exquisite melancholy of the piece--beautiful interpretation.

"So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past."
I don't know why but this piece always reminds me of that quote.

João Furtado-Coelho

+ Gracie James If it always reminds you of that quote, you may rest assured that it was for you that Rachmaninoff wrote the piece... He also wrote it especially for whoever else is reminded of some other quote, or landscape, or whatever -:)) I suppose you know he admitted that, when composing an Etude-tableau, he always had a programme in mind. But he always refused to say which. Apparently when asked he said: "Let them paint whatever comes to their minds" - or something to a similar effect... Shared on Google+
