Cantares
Serrat Joan Manuel Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Pero lo nuestro es pasar
Pasar haciendo caminos
Caminos sobre la mar
Nunca perseguí la gloria
Ni dejar en la memoria
De los hombres mi canción
Yo amo los mundos sutiles
Ingrávidos y gentiles
Como pompas de jabón
Me gusta verlos pintarse
Golpe a golpe, verso a verso
Golpe a golpe, verso a verso
Cuando el jilguero no puede cantar
Cuando el poeta es un peregrino
Cuando de nada nos sirve rezar
«caminante no hay camino
Se hace camino al andar»
Golpe a golpe, verso a verso
The lyrics of Cantares by Joan Manuel Serrat speak about the beauty and fragility of life, and emphasizes the importance of living in the present moment. The opening line, "Todo pasa y todo queda, pero lo nuestro es pasar" translates to "Everything passes and everything remains, but our duty is to pass." This line sets the tone for the entire song, which reflects on the fleeting nature of life and emphasizes the importance of making the most of the time we have.
The lyrics also describe the poet's passion for the subtle and delicate worlds, comparing them to soap bubbles that shimmer with beautiful colors before suddenly disappearing. The poet says that he never sought fame or to leave a lasting memory through his song, but rather that he loved these beautiful ephemeral worlds that could not be captured and held on to permanently.
The song also contains the famous line "caminante no hay camino, se hace camino al andar," which translates to "walker, there is no path, the path is made by walking." This line has become widely used as a metaphor for life, reminding us that we must create our own path through life by taking steps forward, even if we are unsure of the way.
Line by Line Meaning
Todo pasa y todo queda
Everything comes and goes, but what we have is transient
Pero lo nuestro es pasar
But our rite is to pass through it all
Pasar haciendo caminos
To make pathways as we move through
Caminos sobre la mar
A path leading us over the endless seas
Nunca perseguí la gloria
I never sought fame or glory for myself
Ni dejar en la memoria
Nor to leave my song as a legacy
De los hombres mi canción
For I cherish tender and fragile worlds that men can forget
Yo amo los mundos sutiles
Of subtleties and their mildness I am fond
Ingrávidos y gentiles
Light and gentle, they're like soap bubbles in the air
Como pompas de jabón
A fleeting beauty, so ephemeral and rare
Me gusta verlos pintarse
I take delight in seeing them tinged
De sol y grana, volar
With hues of crimson and gold, flying free
Bajo el cielo azul, temblar
Beneath the sky so blue, quivering with glee
Súbitamente y quebrarse
Suddenly bursting in moments of happiness
Caminante, son tus huellas
Traveler, your steps mark the way
El camino y nada más
Nothing more than the path you pave
Caminante, no hay camino
Traveler, there is no path for you to go
Se hace camino al andar
You make your path by walking to and fro
Al andar se hace camino
By walking, you make your path anew
Y al volver la vista atrás
And when you look back upon the view
Se ve la senda que nunca
You'll see the trail which can't be retraced
Se ha de volver a pisar
You'll never tread the path that you've left behind
Caminante no hay camino
Traveler, there is no way ahead
Sino estelas en la mar
Only streaks of waves in the ocean's bed
Hace algún tiempo en ese lugar
Some time ago, in that very place
Where thorns now adorn a once verdant space
There came the voice of a poet, resolute
«caminante no hay camino
‘Traveler, there is no path to take
Se hace camino al andar»
Only paths emerge as you leave this wake
Golpe a golpe, verso a verso
Beat by beat, verse by verse
Murió el poeta lejos del hogar
The poet died, far from his home's breeze
Dust has cloaked him, in a neighboring scene
Al alejarse le vieron llorar
As he left, tears streamed down his visage
«caminante no hay camino
‘Traveler, there is no path to take
Se hace camino al andar»
Only paths emerge as you leave this wake
Golpe a golpe, verso a verso
Beat by beat, verse by verse
Cuando el jilguero no puede cantar
When the goldfinch cannot sing and play
Cuando el poeta es un peregrino
When the poet goes on a pilgrimage someday
Cuando de nada nos sirve rezar
When praying is futile, and words betray
«caminante no hay camino
‘Traveler, there is no path to take
Se hace camino al andar»
Only paths emerge as you leave this wake
Golpe a golpe, verso a verso
Beat by beat, verse by verse
