In the winter of 2009, a few months after singer Tad Doan's last musical project had come to an end, he found new inspiration in a friend and decided to start a new band. “I was planning on giving up on music and pursuing school alone until Pat Brown (Sing It Loud) and Andrew Goldstein (The Friday Night Boys) changed my mind. I posted several bulletins on Myspace hoping to find people to jam with,” Doan said, reflecting on how it all began. When Noel Hernandez responded, the two immediately started writing songs and recording in Tad's home studio. Starting to play local shows, they reached out to drummer Adam Vara, who had previously worked with both Tad and Noel, to fill the spot on drums. In search of a bass player to fill the last void in their line up, old friend Sebastian Oates came on board in the Summer of 2010 and "made us feel complete," said Vara. From then on, Set The Scene was born.
Opening for national touring acts such as Sing It Loud (Epitaph Records), Eye Alaska (Fearless Records), Every Avenue (Fearless Records), and Amber Pacific (Victory Records), the young band has been able to take what they need and apply everything that they've learned. "In the past four to five months, so much has happened and we don't have any other plans other than doing what we love."

Filled with blanks, you never get what you give.
I'll show you my heart if you just turn your back on me.
Acting like I'm carrying the weight of the world on my shoulders.
Every Friday night, returning empty-hearted.
I'm just a sucker for a broken heart without a cause or dagger.
The dusk of my everything is getting closer by the minute.
How do I live when this life is the one string pinning me down?
A goodbye note in one hand and your hopes and dreams in the other.
I'm not worth your bother.
Acting like I'm carrying the weight of the world on my shoulders.
Every Friday night, returning empty-hearted.
I'm just a sucker for a broken heart without a cause or dagger.
The dusk of my everything is getting closer by the minute.
I want to wear this life with pride so get out of my fucking way
Just get out of my fucking way.
This is the dusk of my everything.
Can't seem to keep these curtains from dropping down on me
The lyrics to Set The Scene's song The Note express a feeling of worthlessness and disappointment in oneself. The singer apologizes for their speech being as worthless as the love they give, and they feel as though they never receive what they put out into the world. They want to show their heart but feel like they must turn their back on the person they are speaking to in order to do so. They feel as though they are carrying the weight of the world on their shoulders, returning empty-hearted every Friday night. They are a sucker for a broken heart without a cause or dagger, and they feel like the dusk of everything is getting closer by the minute. The singer questions how to live when this life is the one string that pins them down. They are in a world of disappointment and want to be woken up when they are through. They hold a goodbye note and the hopes and dreams of someone else in their hands, feeling as though they are not worth bothering with.
The last part of the chorus is a declaration of wanting to wear life with pride, but needing to get out of the way of oneself in order to do so. The singer expresses frustration and desperation, feeling like the curtains are constantly closing on them. This song expresses a universal feeling of struggling to find self-worth and questioning the value of one's own existence.
