Two Sleepy People
Seth MacFarlane ft. Norah Jones Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Here we are, out of cigarettes,
Holding hands and yawning,
Look how late it gets.
Two sleepy people by dawn's early light,
And too much in love to say goodnight.

Here we are, in a cozy chair;
Pickin' on a wishbone from the frigidaire.
Two sleepy people with nothing to say,
And too much in love to break away.

Do you remember the nights we used to linger in the hall?
Father didn't like you at all.
Do you remember the reason why we married in the fall?
To rent this little nest and get a bit of rest.

Well, here we are just about the same,
Foggy little fella, drowsy little dame.
Two sleepy people by dawn's early light,
And too much in love to say goodnight.

Here we are, gee, don't we look a mess?
Lipstick on my collar, and wrinkles in my dress
Two sleepy people by dawn's early light,
And too much in love to say goodnight.

Here we are, crazy in the head
Gee your eyes are gorgous, even when they're red
Two sleepy people, who know very well
They're too much in love to break the spell

Do you remember, the nights we used to cuddle in the car?
Watching every last fading star
Remember the doctor said your health was underpar?
And you my little snooks, where ruining you're looks

Well, here we are, keeping up the pace
Letting each tomorrow, slap us in the face

Two sleepy people by dawn's early light,
And too much in love to say goodnight.

Overall Meaning

The song "Two Sleepy People" by Seth MacFarlane featuring Norah Jones is a sweet and romantic duet that captures the essence of a couple who have been together for a long time. The first stanza establishes the setting where the two lovers are out of cigarettes, holding hands, and yawning, and it's very late. They are so in love that they can't say goodnight, even though they are two sleepy people by dawn's early light. The second stanza offers another image of the couple sitting in a cozy chair, picking on a wishbone from the "frigidaire." Once again, they are two sleepy people with nothing to say, and too much in love to break away.

The third stanza offers a glimpse into their past as the couple reminisces about their courtship. They recall the nights spent lingering in the hall, and how the father didn't like the man at all. Despite the challenges, they got married in the fall to rent a little nest and get some rest. The final stanza offers another image of the couple looking in the mirror and realizing how much of a mess they look like. The lipstick on the collar and wrinkles in the dress are all evidence that they are two sleepy people by dawn's early light, still too much in love to say goodnight.

Overall, "Two Sleepy People" is a beautifully written and performed song that speaks to the longevity of relationships and the endurance of love despite the everyday drudgery and challenges that life brings. It's an ode to the power of love to keep two people together, even when everything else seems to be falling apart.

The first night I spent with my boyfriend we watched a movie sitting on his couch. After the movie I didn't want to leave and he didn't want to go to sleep. We stayed up all night holding hands sitting on the couch. I had never been so happy just sitting next to someone. This song reminds me of that night/morning.
