Rebel Rebel
Seu Jorge Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning | Line by Line Meaning
A maquiagem vai desmanchar
Para o seu medo aparecer
Zero a zero, agora eu vou
Você deu mole então eu marco um gol
Zero a zero, você venceu
A maquiagem vai desmanchar
Para o seu medo aparecer
Zero a zero, agora eu vou
Você deu mole então eu marco um gol
Zero a zero, você venceu
Passe amanhã e pegue o que é seu
The lyrics to Seu Jorge's "Rebel Rebel" seem to be about a tumultuous relationship, where one person is unsure of their feelings and actions, while the other person is more confident and in control. The first verse suggests that one person is unsure of which way to go, while the other person doesn't care about their financial situation. The second verse implies that one person has made a mistake but has now found inner peace and is claiming to be on a "zen" vibe. The third verse seems to address the idea that appearances can be deceiving, and that fear can eventually reveal itself. The chorus repeats the phrase "zero a zero," which translates to "0-0" in English, suggesting a tie or a stalemate.
Throughout the song, there is a back-and-forth between the two people, with one seemingly winning and the other losing. The phrase "passe amanhã e pegue o que é seu" appears twice, which translates to "come back tomorrow and take what is yours." This could refer to either a physical possession or a relationship, depending on the interpretation of the lyrics. It seems to suggest that one person is willing to give the other person another chance, but only if they can prove themselves.
Overall, the lyrics to "Rebel Rebel" are ambiguous and open to interpretation. They could be about a romantic relationship, a business partnership, or a friendship, as the themes of uncertainty, control, and redemption are universal.

Seu Jorge has gained exposure through his work as an actor and soundtrack composer. He appeared in the critically acclaimed 2002 film City of God as Mané Galinha, directed by filmmakers Fernando Meirelles and Katia Lund, and then played Pelé dos Santos in Wes Anderson's The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, for which he provided much of the soundtrack in the form of Portuguese language cover versions of David Bowie classics. Bowie later went on to say about his cover album, The Life Aquatic Studio Sessions, that "had Seu Jorge not recorded my songs in Portuguese I would never have heard this new level of beauty which he has imbued them with".
