Bandleader/founder Kirkwood began writing music as a teenager as an outlet for the pain he felt from parents' divorce. Guitarist Perry was the first to join up with Kirkwood's new project, and was quickly followed by the others as the newly formed quartet set up shop in Dallas. Seven Channels issued the independently released EP International Wonderful, and began gigging on a regular basis -- leading to being selected as one of the "Top Five Unsigned Bands in America" on VH1's 1999 Rock Across America Tour.
The new group caught a break when they won a contest called "Quit Your Day Job," which resulted in the winner receiving a record deal with the Palm Pictures label. 2001 saw the release of their self-titled major-label debut. ~ Greg Prato, All Music Guide

and i am glued to you but what am i supposed to do
when all i seem to do is bleed and you're the only one i need
oh i want to be addicted to you so i will chase after you like you
chase you chase after me like i chase after you
crawl in the sun today as i chase all the monsters away
and i think it's time for a change 'cause i won't, no i won't
and i feel so alone but that's the time i call my own yeah
now there's nothing left but you and me so i'll chase after you
like you chase after me like i chase after you
leave today i must take the time to heal
and i will steal what's mine and return
so just let it go and let it go
The lyrics of Seven Channels's song Chasing Monsters express the singer's desire to push away their inner demons or "monsters" by being in the sun and by being with the person they love. The singer admits to being emotionally attached to this person, but feels confused as to what they should do since they feel like they are always bleeding while the other person is the only one they need. The lines "oh i want to be addicted to you so i will chase after you like you chase after me like i chase after you" suggest a cycle of chasing between the singer and the person they love. Ultimately, the singer recognizes that they need to make a change in their life and take time to heal, even if it means being alone.
The concept of "chasing monsters" is a metaphor for facing one's inner fears and insecurities, which can be a difficult process. The singer's desire to be in the sun and the repetition of the phrase "crawl in the sun today" could represent their search for hope and positivity. The theme of a complicated relationship is also present throughout the song, as the singer grapples with their feelings for the other person and the need to move on.
