Strangers
Seven Lion Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Nothing more than strangers
Passing by out on the street
Memories are fading though
It's only been a week
All the little things are gone
The things we used to be
Nobody could take us down
There was only you and me

And without you I can't be
You're the universe to me
You're the air in my lungs
You're the fields where I run
You're the sky where I'm floating

It's you, you, you
It's you, whoa

And without you I can't be
You're the universe to me
You're the air in my lungs
You're the fields where I run
You're the sky where I'm floating

It's you, you, you
It's you, whoa

Don't want to be a stranger
Want to be the one you need
I can be your world, your life
Your lover, all for free
All the little things come back
The things we used to be
Nobody can take us down there
It's only you and me

And without you I can't be
You're the universe to me
You're the air in my lungs

You're the fields where I run
You're the sky where I'm floating

Overall Meaning

The song "Strangers" by Seven Lions & Myon & Shane 54 portrays the feeling of losing someone who once meant everything to you. The first verse begins with the realization that someone who was once very close to you is now just a stranger passing by on the street. The memories of that person are fading away despite it only being a week since they were last together. The second line of the verse provides insight into the depths of their relationship, all the little things that made them who they are, are now gone. However, the memory of the moments they spent together remains intact and nobody can take that away. The chorus emphasizes the importance of the individual that was once a part of their life, comparing them to the universe, the air in their lungs, the fields where they run, and the sky where they float. Through this, the singer tries to convey that the person who was a part of their life meant everything to them, and without them, they are incomplete.

In the second verse, the song takes a different turn with the singer expressing their desire not to be strangers anymore. They want to be the one the other person needs, and they are willing to be their everything, their world, their life, and their lover for free. The chorus follows the same defining theme. The singer, trying to rekindle their relationship, reminds their lover that they can be everything that they once were. The singer is trying to tell their lover that no one can take them down, and they can only depend on each other. Overall, the song conveys the importance of a relationship by describing how much a person can mean to you, and how lost one can feel once it ends.
