Angel's Son
Sevendust Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Life is changing
I can't go on without you
Rearranging, yeah
I will be strong
I'll stand by you

You were fighting everyday
So hard to hide the pain
I know you never said goodbye
I had so much left to say

One last song
Given to an Angel's Son
As soon as you were gone
As soon as you were gone

I have a new life now
She lives through you
What can I do?
Feel so alone now
I pray for you
We still love you

You were fighting everyday
So hard to hide the pain
I know you never said goodbye
I had so much left to say

One last song
Given to an Angel's Son
As soon as you were gone
As soon as you were gone

One last song (I can't believe you're gone )
Given to an Angel's Son (I can't believe)

As soon as you were gone (As soon as you were gone)
As soon as you were gone

Overall Meaning

The song "Angel's Son" by Sevendust is a tribute to the band's former drummer, James 'The Rev' Sullivan, who passed away in 2009. The opening lines of the song "Life is changing, I can't go on without you, Rearranging, yeah, I will be strong, I'll stand by you" indicate the pain of the loss and the struggle to continue without The Rev. The lyrics seem to address The Rev directly, as the band mourns his passing and honors his memory.

The chorus, with the lyrics "One last song, Given to an Angel's Son, As soon as you were gone", suggests that the band is using their music as a way to express their grief and say goodbye to their friend. The lines "I have a new life now, She lives through you, What can I do? Feel so alone now, I pray for you, We still love you" indicate that the band has found a way to move on through their music, but still feel the heavy weight of their loss.

The song's emotional impact comes not only from its lyrics, but from its melody as well. The music builds in intensity throughout the song, matching the rising emotions of the lyrics. The chorus, with its beautiful harmonies, is hauntingly beautiful and serves as a powerful tribute to The Rev.

Overall, "Angel's Son" is a touching tribute to a beloved friend and bandmate, and a poignant reminder of the power of music to heal and bring people together.

I went to see Sevendust in the summer of 2002. The sun that day was extremely hot. Everyone was over heating and using their shirts as wash cloths to cool down from the drinking fountains. As soon as the band started to play this song, clouds swept over us. It started raining and the lead singer stopped. He started to cry and told all of us, "This is a special rain right here". They continued with the song and by the time the song was over, the rain stopped and the clouds went away revealing the dry hot sun again. I will never forget that experience. I was never a die hard fan of Sevendust, but that experience was very strange. That's all I have to share.
