Awake
Seventh Day Slumber Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

As time went on
I opened up my eyes
Never really knew me
You don’t know what’s deep inside

Just so you know
I’ll never be like you
I’ll take what God has made me
I’m not an empty shell

And I hope they see
Instead of following

Finally awake
I’m feeling like today
(I feel everything)
It’s all so clear to me

Finally awake
I’m feeling like today
(I feel everything)
It’s all so clear to me

How many times
Have I hated who I was
Lost sight of what defines me
‘Cause of airbrush magazines

But now I’ve come
To cherish who I am
Sick and tired of faking
A life that wasn’t mine

And I hope they see
Instead of following

Finally awake
I’m feeling like today
(I feel everything)
It’s all so clear to me

Finally awake
I’m feeling like today
(I feel everything)
It’s all so clear to me

I’m alive, it’s all so clear to me
(I’m alive)
And I’m alive, it’s all so clear to me
And I hope they see

Finally awake
I'm feeling like today
(I feel everything)
It’s all so clear to me

Finally awake
I'm feeling like today
(I feel everything)

It’s all so clear to me
(I feel everything)

Overall Meaning

The song "Awake" by Seventh Day Slumber speaks about the journey of self-discovery and self-acceptance. The lyrics imply the realization that the singer has not been true to themselves, and they have finally woken up and come to love and appreciate their true self. The line, "Never really knew me, You don’t know what’s deep inside" shows that the singer has been hiding parts of themselves and not allowing others to get to know their true self. The following line, "I’ll take what God has made me, I’m not an empty shell," indicates that the singer has decided to embrace their true self, rather than conform to society's expectations.

The lyrics also mention the negative impact that airbrushed magazines and societal pressures have had on the singer's self-image. The line, "Lost sight of what defines me 'Cause of airbrush magazines," suggests that the singer has compared themselves to unrealistic standards presented in the media. However, the singer has grown to appreciate and cherish who they are, regardless of these external influences. The line, "Sick and tired of faking A life that wasn’t mine" shows the singer's desire to discard this mask of conformity and embrace their true self.

In the chorus, the repetition of "Finally awake, I’m feeling like today" emphasizes the idea of self-discovery and the liberation that comes with it. The singer is now fully alive and has a newfound clarity about their true self. They also express their hope that others will be able to see them for who they truly are, rather than just following the crowd.

Overall, "Awake" is an important anthem for self-acceptance and authenticity. It encourages listeners to embrace their true selves and discard the pressures to conform to societal expectations.

As a teenager I listened to this song often and loved this song when I was lost. I was too prideful as a teenager to put aside my lust for the things of this world and I was angry at God. Now I'm 26, I know the Lord and He has changed my life and is continuing to change my heart everyday. This song speaks to me even more today than ever before. I can finally say "I feel alive today."

I grew up in a marriage that was like this. I finally stood up to my father. I wish this upon no child. I’m happily married now. And never will hurt my wife this way. No one deserves it. NO One.
