Anarchy in the U.K.
Sex Pistols Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I am an antichrist
And I am an anarchist
Don't know what I want
But I know how to get it
I want to destroy passerby
'Cause I wanna be anarchy
Anarchy for the U.K.
It's coming sometime and maybe
I give a wrong time, stop a traffic line
Your future dream is a shopping scheme
'Cause I, I wanna be anarchy
In the city
How many ways to get what you want
I use the best, I use the rest
I use the NME
I use anarchy
'Cause I wanna be anarchy
It's the only way to be
Is this the MPLA?
Or is this the UDA?
Or is this the IRA?
I thought it was the UK
Or just another country
Another council tenancy
I wanna be anarchy
And I wanna be anarchy
Know what I mean?
And I want to be an anarchist
I get pissed, destroy
The Sex Pistols were known for their rebellious and anti-establishment lyrics, and "Anarchy In The UK" is no exception. The song's first verse embodies the band's anarchist ideals, with lead singer Johnny Rotten declaring himself an "antichrist" and an "anarchist." He admits to not knowing what he wants, but he knows how to get it. The chorus echoes this sentiment, with Rotten yelling "I wanna be anarchy" repeatedly. He rejects any sort of authority or hierarchy ("No dogsbody"), instead embracing chaos and destruction.
The second verse of the song takes aim at consumerism and the idea of the "future dream" being a "shopping scheme." The Sex Pistols saw the rampant commercialism of the 1970s as a symbol of a corrupt society, and they aimed to tear it all down. The repetition of the chorus reinforces the idea that anarchy is the only way to achieve true freedom and individuality.
The final verse of the song is particularly provocative, with Rotten asking if what he sees around him is the MPLA, UDA, or IRA – all groups associated with political violence or terrorism. But he ultimately concludes that it's just "another council tenancy" – a nod to the band's working-class roots and their desire to dismantle class hierarchy.

Sorry, I couldn't help but notice.. Sex Pistols are punk. Real punk. British, Londonian, anarchist punk.
Punkrock is everything from Green Day to Avril Lavigne ... it can have political agenda like left punk, the stuff antifa listens to, but this was the real punk.
Basically they didn't learn instruments, their agenda was noise and provocation, they hated everyone, including their band, but they hated the rest more.
Oh and if you water punk rock down until you coe across Blink182 you're left with punk pop.
Which - is nice, but hardly trv anymore.
I guess punk don't day trv that's a metal thing, but it's the equivalent.
Sex pistols are punk. The real stuff.

The Sex Pistols songs are brilliantly writen/executed for a bunch of kids with no music training,his attitude and talent are more than any music conservatory,they changed not only the music industry they changed the world itself
@butteredsalmonella
Don't underestimate kids without training, once a 15 year old took down a Mafia Drug Lord and proceeded to become the next Mafia Lord
@t3chkn1ght59
@「 Buttered Macaroons 」 Hey, that kid had help. Did you forget the guy with the bowl cut, the dude who looked like a lady, the guy who hated him for no reason, the toxic dude, the gunman, and the daughter of said mafia lord? Let's not forget the Frenchman who became a turtle.
@alejandrovallejo6763
Steve Jhones (the guitarist) and Glen Matlock (the original bass player) where actually very capable musicians, they were really the reason the Pistols songs weren't just noice, like many "attitude" based punk bands were at the time.
@bentrolan859
A fuck you to rules and organization
@daze4837
True punk is about a bunch of teenagers who can't play very well making a band and showing the world rules don't mean anything
@amealyahike9187
Man I remember blasting this song as a teenager with all my friends. Now, 56 years later as a parent of 5 I still play it loud everyday. Punks not dead.
