You Don't Own Me
Sex Pistols and Joan Jett Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I'm not just one of your many toys
You don't own me
Don't say I can't go with other boys
Don't tell me what to do
Don't tell me what to say
An' please, when I go out with you
You don't own me
Don't try to change me in anyway
You don't own me
Don't tie me down cause I'll never stay
I don't tell you what to say
I don't tell you what to do
So just let me be myself
That's all I ask of you
I'm young and I love to be young
I'm free and I love to be free
To live my life the way I want
To say and do whatever I please
The lyrics to Sex Pistols and Joan Jett's song "You Don't Own Me" are a strong declaration of independence and freedom from ownership or control. The lyrics tell the story of a woman who is tired of being treated like a toy and controlled by a man. She asserts her autonomy and refuses to be placed on display or told what to do or say. She pleads with her partner to let her be herself and live her life the way she wants.
The lyrics speak to the struggles of being a woman in a male-dominated society where women are often objectified and owned by their partners. It highlights the need for women to be free to make their own choices, express themselves and live their lives without being held back or restricted by societal expectations.

I saw him dancin' there by the record machine
I knew he must a been about seventeen
The beat was goin' strong
Playin' my favorite song
An' I could tell it wouldn't be long
Till he was with me, yeah me
And I could tell it wouldn't be long
Till he was with me, yeah me, singin'
I love rock n' roll
So put another dime in the jukebox, baby
I love rock n' roll
So come and take your time and dance with me
Ow!
He smiled so I got up and asked for his name
That don't matter, he said
'Cause it's all the same
Said can I take you home where we can be alone
An' next we were movin' on
He was with me, yeah me
Next we were movin' on
He was with me, yeah me, singin'
I love rock n' roll
So put another dime in the jukebox, baby
I love rock n' roll
So come an' take your time an' dance with me
Ow!
Said can I take you home where we can be alone
Next we were movin' on
He was with me, yeah me
An we'll be movin' on
An' singin' that same old song
Yeah with me, singin'
I love rock n' roll
So put another dime in the jukebox, baby
I love rock n' roll
So come an' take your time an' dance with me
I love rock n' roll
So put another dime in the jukebox, baby
I love rock n' roll
So come an' take your time an' dance with
I love rock n' roll
So put another dime in the jukebox, baby
I love rock n' roll
So come an' take your time an' dance with
I love rock n' roll
So put another dime in the jukebox, baby
I love rock n' roll
So come an' take your time an' dance with
I love rock n' roll
So put another dime in the jukebox, baby
I love rock n' roll
So come an' take your time an' dance with me

This raw in-your-face version is awesome. I get that the mix was a bit too rough for commercial airplay but the famous version would not have happened without this one first.

One of the catchiest songs of all time and one of the wimpiest (too short) guitar solos of all time. I could hear some stretched re-imagination of this with like 3 extra minutes.

I had this 45 when it came out. It was a B-side on a smaller label - a Dutch release iirc - it was not heavily promoted, a less polished, less radio-friendly version. It wasn't even made to be hugely successful. It does kick some ass though!

Just heard this at the end of a radio show hosted by Dee Snyder earlier tonight. I am not a fan of the “overplayed for decades” version of this song but immediately liked this version.

It's better than her hit single version, but still not a patch on the Arrows original
