Sexy Zone was announced as a group in a press conference on September 29, 2011. Johnny & Associates's CEO Johnny Kitagawa said, "The group name came from Michael Jackson's sexiness". The members were revealed to be Kento Nakajima, Fuma Kikuchi, Shori Sato, Sou Matsushima], and Marius Yo. Kitagawa chose the members considering the "sexiness of men".
After the press conference, the members appeared in Teigeki Johnnys Imperial Theatre Special "Kis-My-Ft2 with Johnny's Jr.", and premiered their debut song "Sexy Zone", which was subsequently released on November 16, 2011 from Pony Canyon. This song was also the image song of the 2011 FIVB Women's World Cup and the 2011 FIVB Men's World Cup. The group were special supporters of 2011 FIVB World Cup.
In 2014, Marius Yo and Matsushima Sou went on a hiatus. The hiatus was suggested by their company, who said they should train a little bit more. So, the two members started training with the Johnny's Juniors while the 3 remain members kept promoting as Sexy Zone. They returned in 2015, in the single "Colorful Eyes". However, this was not the last time that Sou and Marius went on hiatus.
In 2018, Matsushima Sou was diagnosed with panic disorder. He immediately went on hiatus to take care of his mental health, so the group started promoting as a four-member group. The group had 4 releases, 2 singles and 2 albuns, before Sou's comeback in 2020. He returned slowy, in the middle of pandemic, not participating in all group's activities. Sou went to the online tour POP x STEP TOUR, officially marking his comeback, even though he only performed two songs per show.
In 2020, after 9 years on Pony Canyon, the group changed their label to Top J Records, a label created by Johnnys along with Universal Music Japan for Sexy Zone only. Their first release as an Top J Records artist was the single "RUN". Until today, Sexy Zone is the only group, or artist in general, in the label.
However, in December of the same year of Sou's comeback, Marius Yo went on a hiatus to take care of his mental ad physical health along with focus on his academic life . The group released their 10-year birthday commemorative compilation album without Marius, along of 3 singles and 1 album, until his official graduation 2 years later. The discussions about Marius leaving the group started on 2022 summer, but it was only shared with the public December 27th, via fan club video. Marius said that now he wants a new path for his life but shared his love toward the members, group and fans. Marius had and goodbye concert (without public and later release as fan club video and DVD from Cream single) , travel (recorded and released as fan club video and DVD from Chapter II album), song ("timeless", revealed on his goodbye concert and released in Cream single) along as a documentary episode on the TV series Ride on Time. Marius is no longer active as a idol, but he mantains a public Instagram account where he shows his new everyday life.
After Marius graduation, the group released their 9th full album, "Chapter II", wanting to show a new side of the group, now that they are officialy a four-member group. However, they still referecing the former members. In the goods of the group's 2023 tour, there are a lot of references to Marius, the most obvious one being the 4 bottle T-shirt, that have an 5th bottle hidded, representing him.
In October 2023, the group announced a name change, stating that the name made it impossible to do overseas promotions and made it difficult to online search about them, however, they did not announce the new name or the date of the change. Along with this, their company "Top J Records" changed its name to "Over the Top Records". They did their final concert as Sexy Zone in Tokyo Dome, at Christmas. But in January 8th, it was revealed that Kento Nakajima will leave the group after the name change, which will take place on March 31st. They will continue to promote as a trio under a new name after this.
