Born Fatma Sezen Yıldırım on the 13 July 1954 in Sarayköy/Denizli, Turkey, she began to study at the local agricultural institute, but gave up her studies to concentrate on music full time. She released her first single, "Haydi Şansım/Gel Bana" (Come on My Luck/Come to Me) in 1975. However, she remained undiscovered until her 1976 single "Olmaz Olsun" reached number one in the Turkish charts. Her first album Serçe (Sparrow) appeared in 1978, which gave her also her nickname.
In the coming years, Aksu also acted in two films and opened a live music club in Istanbul. Her music throughout these years remained conventional, but melodic pop, perhaps best exemplified by "Gülümse" (Smile) of 1991.
In 1995, Aksu branched out with the experimental album Işık Doğudan Yükselir (Light from the East), drawing both on western classical and regional Turkish musical traditions. This album made her known outside Turkey and gave her a devoted world music following across Europe.
She has collaborated with many other musicians, such as Tarkan and Sertab Erener, resulting in continental hits such as "Şımarık".

Bir arada kalabilmek
İmkansız
Seneler alıp gitmiş
Ne var ne yoksa herşeyi
İnanılmaz değişen ben miyim
İnanılmaz bu yabancı da kim
Sen misin böyle uzak
Geri dönmek inan işten değil
Hani var ya tutamazsın kendini
Bir ümitle ya olursa dersin hep
Bile bile herşeyin bittiğini
Sonradan kor sonradan kor
Ayrılıklar an be an
Akıp gider zaman sana
Aldırmadan

Sezen Aksu's song Bile Bile is about the pain of losing someone you once loved, and the struggle to move on after a breakup. The opening lines acknowledge the difficulty of being able to stay together, and how it seems impossible to keep a relationship intact. The singer laments the passing of time and how everything has changed, including themselves and the now distant person they once knew so well. The mention of saying goodbye and the possibility of returning suggests that the separation was perhaps not entirely mutual, and the singer still holds onto hope of reconciliation.
The phrase "Bile Bile" means "knowingly" or "with awareness," and this is repeated throughout the song to emphasize the idea of knowing that a relationship is over despite the pain that comes with it. The final lines suggest the passing of time and how it brings about new separations and heartaches, but the singer refuses to let it get to them, choosing to move forward without getting bogged down by the past.

I first heard this song in 1996 while visiting Istanbul. I had just broken up with my boyfriend and felt a great heartbreak. I heard the song in a store and asked the title. I bought the record and listened to it many times. I didn't know the meaning of the words, but I knew I was dealing with heartbreak from the beginning. It's a beautiful song and Sezen Asku's voice is incredible.
