Born Fatma Sezen Yıldırım on the 13 July 1954 in Sarayköy/Denizli, Turkey, she began to study at the local agricultural institute, but gave up her studies to concentrate on music full time. She released her first single, "Haydi Şansım/Gel Bana" (Come on My Luck/Come to Me) in 1975. However, she remained undiscovered until her 1976 single "Olmaz Olsun" reached number one in the Turkish charts. Her first album Serçe (Sparrow) appeared in 1978, which gave her also her nickname.
In the coming years, Aksu also acted in two films and opened a live music club in Istanbul. Her music throughout these years remained conventional, but melodic pop, perhaps best exemplified by "Gülümse" (Smile) of 1991.
In 1995, Aksu branched out with the experimental album Işık Doğudan Yükselir (Light from the East), drawing both on western classical and regional Turkish musical traditions. This album made her known outside Turkey and gave her a devoted world music following across Europe.
She has collaborated with many other musicians, such as Tarkan and Sertab Erener, resulting in continental hits such as "Şımarık".

Sezen Aksu's "Erkekler" talks about the expectations and struggles of being in a relationship, particularly from the perspective of a woman. The first two lines of the song set the tone for the rest of it, stating that loneliness is something only God can handle and that it's impossible to sleep alone. The singer believes that someone has to be there for her, but also recognizes that this person should be able to easily forget about her if things don't work out. The next line, "Ya olmazsa seni şeytanın şahidi sus," is particularly interesting because it implies that the person she's with should keep their promises and not make a fool out of her in front of others. The following line, "Çivi çiviyi söker, sökmezse şansına küs," is challenging to translate directly but it essentially means that if the relationship doesn't work out, she'll have to accept it as the "luck of the draw."
