Goodnight Sweetheart
Sha Na Na Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Good night sweetheart, till we meet tomorrow
Good night sweetheart, sleep will banish sorrow
Tears and parting may make us forlorn
But with the dawn, a new day is born (so I'll say)
Good night sweetheart, tho' I'm not beside you
Good night sweetheart, still my love will guide you
Dreams enfold you, in each one I'll hold you
Good night sweetheart, good night

Good night sweetheart, till we meet tomorrow
Good night sweetheart, sleep will banish sorrow
Tears and parting may make us forlorn
But with the dawn, a new day is born
(so I'll say) Good night sweetheart, tho' I'm not beside you
Good night sweetheart, still my love will guide you
Dreams enfold you, in each one I'll hold you
Good night sweetheart, good night

Overall Meaning

The song "Goodnight Sweetheart" by Sha Na Na is a sweet and tender lullaby sung as a goodbye to a loved one. The song highlights the emotions of sorrow and loneliness that arise on parting from a dear one but assures them that this is temporary as they will meet again. It suggests that even though they may not be together, their love will keep them connected. The lyrics also emphasize the power of sleep and the hope that it will heal their hearts and bring new beginnings with the dawn of a new day - a promising message of hope in dark times.

The verses repeat themselves, invoking the classic lullaby structure of a refrain that returns. The first verse says goodnight and focuses on the anticipation of tomorrow’s meeting, whereas, the second verse shifts to affirming the deep and abiding love between the two people.

Overall, "Goodnight Sweetheart" is a song that reminds us that love transcends space and time and that it can provide comfort even in moments of sadness and separation.

I first saw Sha na na verity show on Television I also, saw them perform at Disneyland in 1982 grad night. Years later. I meet Dr. Scott Powell at Dodgertown Spring training 1993. I was working as an Athletic Trainer in the minor leagues. Dr. Scott Powell would walked in to see your injured athletes. He worked with KerIan-Jobe ,as an orthopedic surgeon. I asked if he was with Sha na na. He stated that he was. He saved his money to go med school. He asked how did I recognize him. I told him I watched the show. I saw Sha na na preform at Disneyland in 1982. I also told him that with a name like Sha na na you never forget that name. He was a very nice person and down to earth. I love listening to their music.
