Hound Dog
Sha Na Na Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You ain't nothing but a hound dog, crying all the time
You ain't nothing but a hound dog, crying all the time
Well, you ain't never caught a rabbit
And you ain't no friend of mine

They said you were high class, honey, that was just a lie
Call y'all high class, that was just a lie
Well, you ain't never caught a rabbit
And you ain't no friend of mine

Said she was high class, honey ,that was just a lie
Call y'all high class, that was just a lie
Well, you ain't never caught a rabbit
And you ain't no friend of mine

You ain't nothing but a hound dog, crying all the time
You ain't nothing but a hound dog, crying all the time

Well, you ain't never caught a rabbit
You ain't no friend of mine

Overall Meaning

"Hound Dog" is one of the most iconic rock and roll songs, originally recorded by Big Mama Thornton in 1953 but most famously covered by Elvis Presley in 1956. Sha Na Na's cover of the song adds their own flair to the classic tune, with their harmonious voices and doo-wop style. The lyrics, however, remain largely the same, with a message that is both scathing and dismissive of the subject of the song.

The first two lines of the song, "You ain't nothing but a hound dog, crying all the time," immediately set the tone for the rest of the lyrics. The singer is essentially calling the subject a useless person, someone who can't even catch a rabbit and spends all their time crying. The next few lines repeat the insult that the subject is "high class" and then immediately contradicts it by repeating the line about not catching a rabbit. The final line makes it clear that the singer wants nothing to do with this person - they are "ain't no friend of mine."

While the lyrics themselves are straightforward and simple, they paint a clear picture of the singer's disdain for the subject of the song. The use of repetition and the blunt insults drive home the point that the subject is worthless and beneath the singer's notice.
