Shaggy stated in an interview that he recorded this song while he was still in the Marines.ย He took a weekend pass and went to New York, straight into the studio and recorded the song while still in uniform.ย He was often "AWOL" for not returning to work on Monday mornings after working at various recording studios all weekend.ย He says he got into a lot of trouble in the Marines, and never made it past the rank of PFC, but was honorably discharged after 4 years and today credits the USMC with giving him the discipline that made him a successful musician.ย I also believed he served in Iraq during Desert Storm.ย Much respect!
