Comet
Shades Apart Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Side of truth
Unlearned in my youth
Lines
Edges on the air
Too much everywhere
I'm not sorry
Spin
Spinning circle game
Every word the same
Rage
Scream across the sky
Rage against the dying light
Overdriving
Black lie smiling
You won't grind me
Shades Apart's "Comet" is a high-energy song that touches on themes such as truth, self-discovery, and rebellion. The song starts with the line "This side of truth, unlearned in my youth," which suggests that the singer has lived a life sheltered from the harsh realities of the world, and is only now starting to discover how things really are. The use of the word "unlearned" implies that there may have been some indoctrination or propaganda at play, which has now been stripped away.
The second verse talks about the frustration of dealing with a world that is full of chaos and noise. The lines "Edges on the air, too much everywhere" paint a vivid picture of a world that is sharp and dangerous, where danger lurks behind every corner. The singer wants to tear away this noise and chaos and find some peace, which is where the chorus comes in: "Tear it away, I'm not sorry." This suggests a rebellious attitude, a refusal to accept the status quo, and a willingness to fight for what is right.
The third verse is perhaps the most powerful, as it speaks of rage and defiance. Lines such as "Rage, scream across the sky, rage against the dying light" suggest a protagonist who is determined to fight against all odds, who is fueled by their anger and frustration. The phrase "dying light" suggests that there may be a sense of urgency, that time is running out, and that action must be taken now. The final line, "You won't grind me" is a defiant statement of independence, suggesting that the singer will not back down, will not be broken, and will not give up.

This is where they started to sound better, ultimately culminating in 1999 with their "Eyewitness" album, one of the catchiest pop/rock albums of all time.
