One Starry Night
Shades Apart Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Eric's room gets too small one night
(he) takes his whole apartment outside
down at his desk he sits and writes
under a streetlight

one starry night just like tonight when these
city lights seem like candlelight
one starry night somewhere between midnight
and sunrise everything will be alright

On the steps someone plays guitar
carrying into the dark
far off a saxophone begins following along
writing the same song

one starry night just like tonight when these
city lights seem like candlelight
one starry night somewhere between midnight
and sunrise everything will be alright

Angela hears the music play
sees eric and suddenly the lights change

dare she let her heart take this one chance?
she says "do you want to dance?"

Overall Meaning

The song "One Starry Night" by Shades Apart depicts a scene of a night embraced by the city lights where everything seems peaceful and serene. Eric, the singer, feels cramped in his room, so he takes his whole apartment outside to enjoy the fresh air. It is already nighttime, but he takes advantage of the ambiance and writes under a streetlight. He senses a rhythm playing and follows it to the source. A guitarist plays on the street steps, and a saxophonist hears the tune and joins in. They all play together the same song, creating a melody that transcends.

As the music continues, Angela, a character who has been observant of the scene, is moved by the blend of the instruments and the relaxed atmosphere. She sees Eric, and a sudden shift in the environment takes place as the lights change. Emboldened by the favorable atmosphere, she asks Eric to dance, taking a chance with him. The song ends with the sentiment that everything will be alright, that this one starry night can bring people together, and that the emotions evoked can shape the course of things to come.
