Dance On
Shadows Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Talking to my friend, I turned around
And saw a total stranger
Hiding out for safety's sake
I found, I put myself in danger

There must be someway I can try to find
An answer to the questions in my mind
Or will I have to always spend my time
Dancing in the shadows
Dancing in the shadows

I saw somebody earning more and more
But he was getting poorer
It seems to me the
More things that you know
The less you can be sure of

There must be someway I can try to find
An answer to the questions in my mind
Or will I have to always spend my time
Dancing in the shadows
Dancing in the shadows

Ooh, there are words
I never make rhyme
It's like black, it's like white

Dancing in the shadows
Dancing in the shadows

Talking to my friend, I turned around
And saw a total stranger
Hiding out for safety's sake
I found, I put myself in danger

There must be someway I can try to find
An answer to the questions in my mind
Or will I have to always spend my time
Dancing in the shadows
Dancing in the shadows

Dancing in the shadows
Dancing in the shadows
Dancing in the shadows
(You got me dancing in the shadows)
Dancing in the shadows
(D-d-d-d-d-dancing)
Dancing in the shadows
(Dancing in the shadows)
Dancing in the shadows
(Dancing in the shadows)
Dancing in the shadows
(You got me dancing in the shadows)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Dance On" by Shadows are about the struggles that one encounters while trying to make sense of the world around them. The song begins with the singer talking to his friend and suddenly noticing a stranger nearby, perhaps reflecting on the constant threat of danger that surrounds us. The singer acknowledges that he has put himself in danger in order to try and make sense of the larger questions in life.

The second verse focuses on the idea that the more you know, the less sure you can be. The singer observes a person who is earning more and more, but becoming increasingly impoverished. This could be read as a critique of modern society's relentless pursuit of wealth and power at the expense of what truly matters in life. The chorus repeats the desire to find answers to the questions in the singer's mind, but the only thing he seems to be able to do is dance in the shadows - a metaphor for trying to find meaning in a confusing and uncertain world.

Overall, "Dance On" is a poignant reflection on the human struggle to understand life's big questions. The song acknowledges the confusion and danger inherent in that process, but ultimately suggests that we must keep dancing and searching for meaning, even in the shadows.

When we emmigrated from Malta back in 1963, I remember hearing this song either on the ship or soon after we arrived I'm not entirely sure .... But hey, not a bad memory considering I was only 5 years old at the time!

... Anyway many, many years went by ( ... I was well into my late 40's or even later I can't pin down exactly when ) but since I'm such a romantic at heart I started to find myself humming this song but not knowing why. It just kept nagging at me, I'd hum the song & just remember it taking me back to when our family were on the boat back in 1963 coming into Sydney Harbour. (...talk about songs taking you back hey ?)

More time went by, but that song was not going away & pestered the crap out of me as again, I'd find myself humming it at the most random of times. So I just had to know it's roots to put it to bed. It seemed to take ages to research WHAT the actual song was, but I just knew the melody of the song & went from there.

And Yep, "Dance On" ~ by The Shadows it was! ... Thank You Hank & Co.

... No wonder I pursued a lifelong passion for Guitar Playing as a young teenager, a passion that has stayed with me ever since and one that has never failed me whether through thick & or through thin!

... True Story

My dad listens to the Shadows very often (he's in his late 60s) and this song often gets in my head randomly when I have no thoughts. I always forget the title so I spend 10 minutes in The Shadows greatest hit list before I find it - a bit of a challenge but always satisfying when I can say "it's the song in my head!"

In the summer of 1963 i spent five weeks in Dorchester, Dorset with the purpose to improve my knowledge of the English language. One morning I was walking from my family's home in Queens Avenue to the language school in the centre of Dorchester. I was passing a fleamarket (or a circus - don't fully remember) and from there I heard the typical Shadows-sound of a catchy tune. I listened for a while and then decided that I wanted this record. I managed to find the place where the record player was standing (yes, thats how they did it in those days). I asked the operator (disc-jockey..??) if I could buy the record. I was happy when he eventually agreed and asked for a sum that I could just about afford with my limited pocket money. That was my very first record. Dance On with The Shadows. I still have the record but unfortunately my record player doesn't work very well. Good that YouTube works.. Greetings from Mariehamn, Finland.

I've always loved this track and the older I get the more it reminds me of the Overlook Hotel in Stephen Kings's The Shining. It has a perfect haunted ballroom sound

Recuerdo lejanamente que los primeros acordes de esta chulada eran el intro de un programa de Radio Capital
