The Ernst twins, Max and Spencer, grew up in Silver Spring, Maryland, and displayed a passion for music from an early age. They formed a rock band called Upslide during middle school and performed locally in the Washington, D.C., area for several years. Their talent attracted the attention of Magus Entertainment, a New York-based management company, who secured them a publishing deal with Cherry Lane Music. While attending Gonzaga College High School, they formed a pop duo called Trust Fall and began touring in different parts of the country. It was during a performance at the 9:30 Club in Washington, D.C., in 2007 that they met Chelsea Lee, who would become an integral part of the group. In 2009, Chelsea signed as a solo artist with Atlantic Records, and in the same year, Max came out as gay to his brother, marking a significant personal milestone. Chelsea and Spencer initiated a romantic relationship in 2010.
After completing high school, the Ernst twins deferred college to pursue a record deal with Epic Records, which ultimately fell through. Subsequently, they both enrolled at the University of Maryland. During their college years, they formed a folk rock duo called The Walking Sticks and released their debut EP, "World So Bright," in 2012. The album showcased an acoustic roots rock sound and was recorded live.
Around 2011, Lee joined The Walking Sticks after ending her solo contract with Atlantic Records. The group underwent a significant style change, transitioning from folk rock to dream-pop, and released their second EP, "Send the Night," in late 2013.
In March 2016, The Walking Sticks changed their name to Shaed to reflect their evolving musical direction. They signed with Photo Finish Records in June 2016 and embarked on a tour with Marian Hill and VΓ©ritΓ© later that year. In September 2016, Shaed released their debut EP under the new name, titled "Just Wanna See." The band gained further exposure when their single "Name On It" was featured in a Victoria's Secret commercial in May 2018. In April 2017, they toured as an opener for Bishop Briggs.
In September 2017, the band members moved in together and began recording their second EP, "Melt," in a home studio. Their breakout single, "Trampoline," was released on May 18, 2018, and gained significant attention. Shaed released "Melt" on September 21, 2018, through Photo Finish Records. The song "Trampoline" was also featured in an Apple MacBook Air commercial on October 30, 2018. In October 2018, Chelsea Lee and Spencer Ernst got married in Arlington, Virginia.
Shaed's single "No Other Way" was released on October 16, 2020, via Photo Finish Records, continuing their journey as a band, exploring their unique blend of indie pop and dream-pop elements.

And what she did for me
I was swimming in the darkness
'Til she set me free
She opened up my heart
To a whole new love
I never knew was there
And she left my arms
I was so unprepared
What if I do?
What if I don't?
What if I'm feeling lonesome without you?
What if I lose?
Where would I go?
Why am I feeling lonesome without you??
I could tell you all about him
The way he touched my face
I'd be throwing such a tantrum
But he could ease my pain
He opened up my heart
To a whole new love
I never knew was there
When it fell apart
And he left my arms
I was so unprepared
What if I do?
What if I don't?
What if I'm feeling lonesome without you?
What if I lose?
Where would I go?
Why am I feeling lonesome without you?
Gonna beg you to stay
'Cause I know that you're the one
Don't you take that away
I know you wanna quit
But I'm not ready to let go
Gonna bend 'til I break
What if I do?
What if I don't?
What if I'm feeling lonesome without you?
What if I lose?
Where would I go?
Why am I feeling lonesome without you?
What if I do?
What if I don't?
What if I'm feeling lonesome without you?
What if I lose?
Where would I go?
Why am I feeling lonesome without you?
Ooh, ooh
So lonesome without you
Ooh, ooh
So lonesome without you, no
So lonesome, so lonesome
So lonesome without you
No
The lyrics in Shaed's song "Lonesome" describe the feeling of heartbreak and loneliness after being separated from a loved one. The first verse tells the listener that the singer had someone who did something amazing for them and helped them escape the darkness they were in - this person opened up the singer's heart to an entirely new kind of love. However, when they were separated, the singer was left feeling unprepared and alone, asking themselves questions like "What if I do/don't?" and "Where would I go?" to try and understand their feelings. The chorus tells the listener that the singer is feeling lonely without this loved one, and they are begging for them to stay because they know they are the only one for them. The final verses repeat the same themes, this time from the perspective of a female singer who had a lover that could ease her pain but ultimately left her feeling lost and unprepared.
Overall, the lyrics in Shaed's "Lonesome" song deal with the emotional struggles that come with heartbreak and being separated from someone you love. The lyrics are filled with questions and emotions, and the singer is seeking answers to understand their feelings of loneliness and heartbreak.

So heartbreakingly beautiful. This is an anthem for years of co-dependent relationships that ended because of the emptiness in my soul that could never be filled by another person's love. My loneliness came from a lack of self-love and I depended so much on another person to make me feel whole.

was eating in a small diner in San Francisco, heard "what if I do?" over medium to loud bar banter. I hoped to God Shazam could pick it up and after a few tries, it did. Gorgeous, convicting, song.
