Gone With Angels
Shaggy Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Closest to me she must be a good child?
Don't ignore the signs, that's right
You be her teacher, taking

Shivering, she awakes in the cold sweat
Terrified so she speaks under her breathe
Makes a fake cry for help, she's a real mess
That's the sign of the stress, ma, listen to her

Heartbeats working overtime in her chest
Scared stiff from approaching footsteps
Ignoring the stains on her torn dress
Come now ma, listen to her

How could you put your own child in danger?
And turn around and take the words of a stranger
You didn't wanna face the facts so you blamed her
Too late ma, you should have listened to her

Gone, she's asleep, finally, she's at peace
With the angels
Gone, out of reach, finally, souls in peace
With the angels

She's fading like a delicate flower
Try to wash away the shame in the shower
Defending him left her feeling overpowered
You were wrong ma, you didn't listen to her

It was there in the words of the letter
Had you read it maybe things would be better
You let her down and I won't let you forget her
Save ya tears ma, you should have listened to her

How could you put your own child in danger?
And turn around and take the words of a stranger
You didn't wanna face the facts so you blamed her
Save ya tears ma, you didn't listen to her

Gone, she's asleep, finally, she's at peace
With the angels
Gone, out of reach, finally, souls in peace
With the angels

Why day, why day
Why day, why day

Gone, she's asleep, finally, she's at peace
With the angels
Gone, out of reach, finally, souls in peace
With the angels

Gone, she's asleep, finally, she's at peace
With the angels
Gone, out of reach, finally, souls in peace
With the angels

Gone, she's asleep, finally, she's at peace
With the angels
Gone, out of reach, finally, souls in peace
With the angels

Gone, she's asleep, finally, she's at peace
With the angels

Gone, out of reach, finally, souls in peace
With the angels

Overall Meaning

The song "Gone With Angels" by Shaggy is a heartfelt and emotional piece that shines light on the serious issue of child abuse. The lyrics speak of a young girl who has fallen victim to abuse and the inability of her mother to recognize and respond to the signs. The opening line, "Closest to me she must be a good child?" suggests that the mother is in denial of her daughter's situation and unwilling to accept the truth. However, the chorus repeatedly reminds that the girl is now "finally at peace with the angels", suggesting that she has passed away due to the trauma she experienced.

The second verse speaks of the girl's fear and helplessness, as she wakes up to find herself in an abusive situation once again. The mother is urged to listen to her daughter's fake cry for help, which is a sign of her extreme stress and trauma. The song then goes on to criticize the mother's ignorance and inability to recognize the signs of abuse. The bridge highlights how the mother could have saved her daughter if she had read a letter that contained the evidence of abuse, emphasizing the mother's responsibility.

The lyrics are powerful and evoke a range of emotions from sadness to frustration. It illustrates the issues of denial and the lack of attention to warning signs in situations of abuse. It is important to recognize the signs and take action, and not ignore the cries for help from those in need.
