Shai was formed at Howard University in Washington D.C. Three of the four members, Marc Gray, Carl Martin, and Darnell Van Rensalier, belonged to the same fraternity, Alpha Phi Alpha, and along with good friend, Garfield A. Bright, decided to take a chance at turning their hobby of singing into a career. Moving to New York City, New York, the foursome tried to secure a record deal, but they couldn't find any takers. With their money running out and their future looking bleak, the members of Shai took a chance on a radio contest that radio station WPGC was sponsoring. They chose to perform a song that Carl Martin wrote, "If I Ever Fall in Love," which they sang a cappella. The song won the contest and began finding airplay on WPGC. Other stations soon followed, and suddenly the record labels came calling. After signing with Gasoline Alley, Shai began putting together its debut album.

"If I Ever Fall in Love" was the first single and peaked at #2 in the U.S. The next two releases from the double-platinum album, "Comforter" and "Baby I'm Yours" both reached #10. The group's next CD was a remix album largely consisting of new versions of their previous hits, which resulted in a revised version of the song "Baby I'm Yours" simply titled "Yours" which peaked at #63. Future efforts fell shy of the Top 40 although the group did briefly reappear there in 1994 with the #34 "The Place Where You Belong" from the Beverly Hills Cop III soundtrack. The group's last charting single was 1996's #89 single "I Don't Wanna Be Alone". Shai is still active releasing such albums as "Destiny" (1999), "Back From The Mystery System: The Love Cycle" (2004), "Love Cycle: Back From The Mystery System" (2007) and "Worldwide (as D-n-G of Shai" (2009). He became an abusive narcissist when I was pregnant with our first and only child back in late 2015/early 2016 and it went downhill from there. We played this song and Together Forever by Shai at our wedding. Never knew I'd be a single mom and divorced ever since a little girl thinking of my life when I grew up. That's so cool Shai met and formed at Howard University. Shai is such an underrated male R&B group from the '90s they are in my top three favorite male R&B groups. This is one of their most slept on songs too. I miss feel good music about love like this! 30 years later it still sounds fresh and current.

This video was one of many during the late 80's early 90's that made me want to go to college as a little kid. I remember the positive images of Black college life on TV. Of course 'The Cosby Show' and 'A Different World' will always be two of the first things that comes to mind for most but I also remember a few music videos such as TLC's 'Baby, Baby, Baby' and Lords of the Underground's video 'Here come the Lords' that portrayed the Black college experience. I always wondered what it would have been like to be a Black college student at an HBCU during the late 80's, early 90's. It seemed like it was a good time!

That Black college vibe was so positive. The sad part is that it was more popular with Black people than White. Mainstream culture wanted more of the gangsta vibe, the violence, the negativity...and they got it. I look at the song "Waterfalls" by TLC as the end of an era & a warning. This song reminds me of my dearly departed sister friend Niecey!!! She used to rewind this tape back to back. I remember her dragging me to Showtime at the Apollo to see them perform. They did this song and she melted right there on the spot. Sweet memories of one of my best friends. We lost her in 2002 she was only 31 with so much more ahead. Just listening and reminiscing!!! I will be 49 this year and l can still remember singing acapella to Shai with a few of my friends in high school. We were all in choir and would have “little impromptu jam sessions” before class. Yeah, life seemed completely different, much more beautiful and interesting. The music in those days really reflected that.If I could get in a time machine and go back to those days any time i want, I would take trips to the 90's or 80's like 3 times a week.
