She was born in Madrid and made her musical debut at the age of 12 on TVE singing for Nikka Costa. She later studied singing under the tutelage of Robert Jeantal before touring extensively with her mother Rocio as a backing singer throughout Spain, Mexico and the United States. While continuing her studies in Miami, she was courted by several major record labels, recording a series of demos including a session of songs by English songwriter Richard Daniel Roman. In 2001 she moved to Mexico and signed to BMG who later released her eponymous debut album which was largely ignored by both critics and public alike. This album was followed by Recordando in 2006 on EMI, an album dedicated to her mother and which went straight to number one in Spain, going platinum in its second week after selling over 80,000 singles. She has sold more than 200,000 albums in Spain and 30,000 in Mexico. She has also performed at the Latin Grammy Show singing "Amor Eterno".
En Mi Viejo San Juan

Cuantos sueños forjé
En mis noches de infancia
Mi primera ilusión
Y mis cuitas de amor
Son recuerdos del alma
Una tarde me fui
Pues lo quiso el destino
Pero mi corazón
Se quedó frente al mar
En mi viejo San Juan
Adiós, adiós, adiós
Borinquén querida, tierra de mi amor
Adiós, adiós, adiós
Mi diosa del mar, mi reina del palmar
Me voy, pero un día volveré
A buscar mi querer, a soñar otra vez
En mi viejo San Juan
Pero el tiempo pasó
Y el destino burló
Mi terrible nostalgia
Y no pude volver
Al San Juan que yo amé
Pedacito de patria
Mi cabello blanqueó
Y mi vida se va
Ya la muerte me llama
Y no quiero morir
Alejada de ti
Puerto Rico del alma
Adiós, adiós, adiós
Borinquén querida, tierra de mi amor
Adiós, adiós, adiós
Mi diosa del mar, mi reina del palmar
Me voy, pero un día volveré
A buscar mi querer, a soñar otra vez
En mi viejo San Juan
The song "En Mi Viejo San Juan" by Shaila Dúrcal is all about the memories of a person who grew up in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The song starts with the singer talking about how many dreams she had in her old San Juan. It was where her childhood and first love memories were forged. All these things are now just memories, but they remain in the singer's soul.
The song then talks about how she left San Juan for another country and how her heart remained in her old town. She says goodbye to her beloved Puerto Rico and talks about how she will come back someday to search for her love and dream again in her old town. However, time passed, and she couldn't come back to San Juan because of the unrelenting destiny. The singer talks about how she has grown old, who's now approaching the end of her life, and how death is calling for her. But, she doesn't want to die alone, miles away from her beloved Puerto Rico. She wants to return to her old San Juan, where she had all her memories, and where her soul would rest in peace. The song is an intense and emotionally charged ballad that brings the sentiments of the singer.
