She was born in Madrid and made her musical debut at the age of 12 on TVE singing for Nikka Costa. She later studied singing under the tutelage of Robert Jeantal before touring extensively with her mother Rocio as a backing singer throughout Spain, Mexico and the United States. While continuing her studies in Miami, she was courted by several major record labels, recording a series of demos including a session of songs by English songwriter Richard Daniel Roman. In 2001 she moved to Mexico and signed to BMG who later released her eponymous debut album which was largely ignored by both critics and public alike. This album was followed by Recordando in 2006 on EMI, an album dedicated to her mother and which went straight to number one in Spain, going platinum in its second week after selling over 80,000 singles. She has sold more than 200,000 albums in Spain and 30,000 in Mexico. She has also performed at the Latin Grammy Show singing "Amor Eterno".
Tu Carcel
Shaila Dúrcal Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Si así lo quieres qué le voy a hacer
Tu vanidad no te deja entender
Que en la pobreza se sabe querer
Quiero llorar
In "Tu Cárcel," Shaila Dúrcal sings about heartbreak and the consequences of leaving a loving relationship. The song starts with the singer acknowledging that her lover is leaving her because of his own vanity, and she cannot do anything about it. She points out that he fails to understand that true love can be found in the most impoverished conditions. The singer expresses her sadness and despair that he has chosen his ego over their relationship. She anticipates the pain that he will eventually feel from his reckless decision.
As the song continues, the singer attempts to warn her lover of the potential consequences of his actions. She reminds him that nobody is perfect, and he may find other things in life that may seem better, but nothing compares to the honest and sincere love they once shared. The singer advises him to forget about what he is leaving behind and to focus on what his new adventure may bring. However, she warns him that his actions will ultimately lead him to his own prison, and he will end up never escaping the loneliness and regret that will follow.
The song is a classic Spanish ballad that showcases Dúrcal's powerful voice and emotional range. Its lyrics have connected with countless listeners who have experienced heartbreak and loss. "Tu Cárcel" reminds us that love can be found in even the most challenging of circumstances, and it's vital to treasure and hold onto sincere love when found.
