Emotional Thing
Shakespear's Sister Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I've seen the world from a first class seat.
I've read the bitch and Ulysses.
I've tried religion and philosophy.
I've walked upon the sea.
Now the air is getting thin.
You make my senses start to swim.
It's just a suicidal whim,
But I can't resist
An emotional thing... an emotional thing.
An emotional thing... an emotional thing.
Now, isolation can be sweet;
No juvenile deliquent heat.
I don't have to tell ya where I'm (coming) from
If I leave my cat suit on.
Now the air is getting thin.
You make my senses start to spin.
It's just a suicidal whim,
But I can't resist
An emotional thing... an emotional thing.
An emotional thing... an emotional thing.
Now the air is getting thin.
You make my senses start to spin.
Now the air is getting thin.
You make my senses start to spin.
It's just a suicidal whim,

But I can't resist
An emotional thing... an emotional thing.

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of "Emotional Thing" by Shakespear's Sister seems to follow the artist's journey of self-searching and exploration. She sings about seeing the world from a first-class seat and reading "the bitch and Ulysses," which alludes to the experience of wealth and knowledge. She then talks about trying religion and philosophy, suggesting a search for meaning and purpose. In the following lines, she mentions walking upon the sea, which might be symbolic of taking risks and pushing boundaries.

Despite this journey, the artist still desires something intangible and overwhelming, something she can't resist - an emotional thing. She realizes that isolation can be sweet, but it is not enough to escape the pull of this emotional desire. The repetition of the line "the air is getting thin, you make my senses start to spin" emphasizes the suffocating and disorienting effect of this desire.

Overall, "Emotional Thing" seems to be about the artist's struggle to reconcile her desire for emotional fulfillment with her journey of exploration and self-discovery. She can't resist this emotional thing, and the song's repeated and haunting melody emphasizes that it might be her ultimate downfall.
