Heroine
Shakespear's Sister Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh baby the freezing cold
Oh baby the dead of night
Oh baby the blue blue flowers
Oh baby in the midnight hour

I'll be your heroine
If they come knocking
I won't let them in
I'll be your heroine heroine

Oh baby just in time
Well maybe the night is mine
Oh baby don't forget
I'll save you it's not over yet

If you're feeling sick and it starts to rain
When you're in a fix I'll ease your pain

I'll be your heroine
If they come knocking
I won't let them in
I'll be your heroine heroine

Oh baby the telephone
Oh baby the devil's smile
Oh baby you're not alone
Don't worry I'll stay a while

I can hold your hand when the night is dark
In this foreign land I'm your Joan of Arc

I'll be your heroine
If they come knocking
I won't let them in
I'll be your heroine heroine

I'm your heroine
And if they come knocking

I won't let them in
I'm your heroine

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Shakespear's Sister's song Heroine convey a message of love and protection. The singer addresses her beloved, whom she calls "baby," and promises to be their hero, or heroine. She describes situations of danger and uncertainty, such as the freezing cold, the dead of night, the devil's smile, and the possibility of someone "knocking" at the door. But despite these threats, the singer assures her partner that she will always be there for them, holding their hand when the night is dark and easing their pain when they're in a fix. She even compares herself to Joan of Arc, the medieval French warrior who led her army to victory against the English forces.

The chorus of the song is particularly powerful, as it repeats the phrase "I'll be your heroine" several times, emphasizing the singer's commitment to protecting and supporting her partner. By using the word "heroine" instead of "hero," the singer challenges traditional gender roles and suggests that women can be just as strong and capable as men.

Overall, the lyrics to Heroine are a testament to the power of love and the importance of being there for each other in difficult times. The singer's message is one of reassurance and comfort, reminding her partner that they are not alone and that she will always be their hero.

I don’t know if hashtags or @‘s do anything on YouTube or not, but someone please tell me the #PetShopBoys are ALL OVER remixing this and other #Shakespear’sSister songs. This in particular is begging for not just any megastar’s remix, but something about this song DEMANDS the #PetShopBoys treatment. Neil’s voice in the backseat accenting their voices in carefully chosen places (not just splashed over everything like bucking a can of paint at it) and Chris’ synth beats shaping the envelope (I can hear his high-range, quick-cut & clean snare reversals and more tricks he’s known for to get bodies on the dance floor doing both shirt fades in/out and sharp Ginsu 2000 sliced high-hats, again, without replacing the Sisters’ original magic) really has to happen!!!

Don’t take this as disrespect to any of the Masters, but I’m so thrilled to see these now “old-fogies”, almost as if telepathically understanding: “Today’s Music is DUMB… it’s time for those of us left who made the Last of the Great Music to stand up, possibly for the last time, and remind the youth: “THIS IS WHAT ALL OF IT’S ALL ABOUT!”. Some of the greatest voices, guitarists, drummers, techies, bassists are finally giving a Masterclass in late 60’s/70’s/80’s/90’s real music before 97% of the 2K’s onwards just got cheaper, dirtier, trashier and officially “you honestly suck, but your RCA and Sony Records engineers will spend 3 minutes with free Internet sound-editors and presets to polish this turd and make $MILLION$ despite your lack of blessed or earned talent or putting the real work into your that WE put into OUR music, and some of us, 40-60 years later, are still far preferred over your thrice-baked laugh-track Grammy Winning albums!

“We didn’t always have a fucking “UNDO” button, Captain Skippy! WE had to manually fix that shit. Accept our wisdom before regretting forgetting to do so.”

What made me laugh SO HARD I nearly fell over and couldn’t wait to show friends (after replying to him) one of the brothers from #Oasis made sent a moving online post about (paraphrased, but we’ll) the grave state of today’s music compared to the true talent and integrity that Oasis and others of their generation poured into their sound.

I hate Oasis, so said something like: “Who are you? I know you’re one of the brothers from that shite One-Hit-Blunder Brother’s from the UK, “Oasis.” You had 1-2 hit songs from one album one year. You’re nobody and hate it! You’re trying to snake your own name into the same league as anyone important? Iggy Pop, New Order, Siouxsie , Bauhaus, Marr, Morrissey, Willie Nelson, Duran Duran, Gary Numan, Depeche Mode, the Cure, Pixies- they’re all STILL CRUSHING IT 40+ years and stacks of albums later, and WHO ARE YOU, Mr. WhatsThatONESong? You (true story) honestly encouraged me to take the radio antenna off of my own car! LOL!” (And I’ve never even thought to put it back on).

What a debut single, seriously! It was SO refreshing for 1989. It was back to Electronica with edge. Should have been MASSIVE!

@James-wj8eq

Unfortunately, 89 was the year of Happy Mondays, Inspiral Carpets, Stone Roses and the whole 'Madchester' summer of love.
