I Don't Care
Shakespear's Sister Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Walking through the rooms in my head
I came across your image,
You looked at me with that sweet smile and said
Something they won't let me repeat
We hurt the ones we love the most
Its a subtle form of compilment

I don't care if you talk about me
I don't care if you write it out in stone
Whenever I fall I land on my feet
I don't care, I just don't care now
Mark the spot you hate with an X
Then shoot your bow and arrow
Do your worst, get it all off your chest
I'll hold my breath and swallow
We hurt the ones we love the most
It's a subtle form of discipline
I don't care if you talk about me
I don't care if you write it out in stone
Whenever I fall I land on my feet
I don't care, I just don't care now

I don't care if you act like a queen
I don't care if you take it out on me
I've got nine lives and I land on my feet
I don't care, I just don't care now

In a boreolic iceberg came Victoria
Queen Victoria sitting shocked upon on the rocking horse of a wave
Said to the laurette, this minx of course,
Is sharp as any linx and blacker, deepper
Than the drinks as hot as any hottentot
Without remorse, for the minx that she
And the drinks you can see are hot as any hotten tot
And not the goods for me,
Hot as any hotten tot
And not the goods for me
I don't care if you talk about me
I don't care if you write it out in stone
Whenever I fall I land on my feet
I don't care, I just don't care now
I don't care if you act like a queen
I don't care if you take it out on me

I've got nine lives and I land on my feet
I don't care, I just don't care now

Overall Meaning

The song, "I Don't Care" by Shakespear's Sister, addresses the idea of not caring about what others say or do to the singer. The first verse of the song highlights the image of a former lover remaining in the singer's head. The lover is seen smiling with an expression that is not discussed. The statement, "We hurt the ones we love the most, it's a subtle form of compliment" speaks volumes about the emotional weight the relationship brought onto the singer. It appears that the love was mutual, and it ended with a bittersweet feeling of joy and pain.

The chorus emphasizes the singer's attitude towards all of this. She speaks of the many ways people can use to try and bring her down. She lists them one by one and concludes with "I don't care, I just don't care now." It's almost as if she's making a conscious choice to shut off her emotions and not obsess over what others are doing or saying to her. The second verse is about the singer's resilience in the face of an enemy. She tells her detractors to mark the spot where they hate her, shoot arrows at it and do their worst. She will still stand strong and not let them affect her.

The bridge is a bit confusing as it's a spoken word piece that confuses the main theme of the song. It's about Queen Victoria and has no connection with the song. The song concludes with the last chorus reiterating the singer's ability to handle the stress of life.

Aahh ...from the days when music was good ..when people played their own instruments and you actually cared about who was at number 1 in the charts.... Amazing...such a criminally underrated group

@andrewwalsh8274

They are excellent songwriters. I think their singing voices are spectacular as well!

@dirkpehrke9909

Not just their songs, but their videos were great and exceptional, even back then. I liked them back then, but I failed to recognise how exceptional they were. Siobhan’s style - this isn’t a comment about her looks - is just great.

@sweet-beaks

Like a shiny gothic disco ball.

This should have Millions of Views. What a song ❤️

@user-tf3xo9vo7m

Theres no that sincerity, real emotions in modern music videos! Thei are inimitable!!!💕🔥💖

@2beand2have

They were around at the best time, instead of millions of views, Sold millions of cassette tapes, cds and vinyl, and had millions of views on TV since there was only 4 channels to watch.

@neilmccollam9560

I just remember how ahead of their time they were and I don't think the group were appreciated for what became a wave of what was then being called "Alternative". When "Stay" was on radio it was on the charts with Vanilla Ice and thought God help us...I hope the Music Historians give "Sister's" the credit due...👍💯❤️

@johntonelli5930

Hmmm. When you look at them they really only wrote one classic hit and then delivered alot of more formulaic forgettable singles. The Bananarama connection didn't give them much alternative cred at the time - and they looked like posers. Consider Concrete Blonde and Siouxsie Sioux were already doing this exact thing - only better. All of that doesn't matter now, but back then it might have really prevented them from being more of a staple of the era.

@Hellwyck

I don't believe Shakespears Sister was considered alternative when bands like Faith No More and Mazzy Star did it much more obviously.
