As a duo, Fahey and Detroit released two albums and are best-known for the song "Stay", a top five hit in the U.S. which spent eight weeks at number one in the U.K. Both "Stay" and the follow-up single "Hello (Turn your radio on)" are co-written by Dave Stewart under the pseudonym Jean Guiot. Detroit left the act after many quabbles with Fahey, and Shakespear's Sister's Third album #3, technically a Fahey solo album, was shelved by London Records. Years later, after wrangling the album rights from the label, Fahey released it independently.
After sporadically recording under her own name for a few years, Fahey reclaimed the Shakespear's Sister moniker for herself as a solo artist and independently released a new album, ''Songs from the Red Room'', in November 2009 accompanied by touring in the UK. A physical release of "Songs from the Red Room" in the U.S. went ahead on 12 April 2010, followed by a deluxe edition double-CD with 8 bonus tracks on 3 May in the UK.
Waiting
Shakespear's Sister Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Don't let the red glow burn my eyes
And if you make me pay to keep you
Name your price
And I'm just waiting
I'm waiting
And I'm just waiting
You think you miss me
I always made you smile
I feel the rope start to burn
But the victory will be mine
And I'm just waiting
I'm just waiting
I'm waiting
Just waiting....
what time, what time, what time is this?
one man came....with my sister
he pulled her trousers down to the ground
... blue sky speak to me speak to me
with your hair so long and feathery
with Chinese sunset her arm, voice, spirit...
The lyrics to Shakespear's Sister's song "Waiting" seem to be about a person waiting for someone they care about to return, but they are also feeling a sense of betrayal and hurt. The first two lines suggest that the person they are waiting for is leaving and they don't want to be hurt by their absence. The line "if you make me pay to keep you, name your price" implies that the relationship is unequal and the waiting person is willing to do anything to keep the other person around.
The next verse seems to be directed at the person who left. They believe that the other person thinks they miss them, but they are confident in their own abilities to be victorious without them. The last line "but the victory will be mine" suggests that the waiting person has some sort of plan or revenge in mind.
The final verse is a bit more ambiguous and seems to reference other events or situations. The line "what time, what time, what time is this?" could be a rhetorical question about the state of their relationship. The next line "one man came...with my sister" is a reference to the story of Tamar and Amnon in the Bible, where Amnon rapes Tamar, his half-sister. The line "blue sky speak to me speak to me" seems to be a call for guidance or clarity. The rest of the verse references various images, but it is unclear how they all relate to each other or to the rest of the song.
Overall, the lyrics to "Waiting" suggest a complex and possibly dysfunctional relationship. There is a sense of longing and desperation, as well as a desire for revenge or justice. The song leaves many questions unanswered, but it is clear that the waiting person is in a difficult and painful situation.
