Little Red Riding Hood
Sham the Sham Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Who's that I see walkin' in these woods?
Why, it's Little Red Riding Hood
Hey there Little Red Riding Hood
You sure are looking good
You're everything a big bad wolf could want
Listen to me
Little Red Riding Hood
Go walking in these spooky old woods alone
Owoooooooo!
What big eyes you have
The kind of eyes that drive wolves mad
So just to see that you don't get chased
I think I ought to walk with you for a ways
What full lips you have
They're sure to lure someone bad
So until you get to grandma's place
I think you ought to walk with me and be safe
I'm gonna keep my sheep suit on
Until I'm sure that you've been shown
That I can be trusted walking with you alone
Owoooooooo!
Little Red Riding Hood
I'd like to hold you if I could
But you might think I'm a big bad wolf so I won't
Owoooooooo!
What a big heart I have
The better to love you with
Little Red Riding Hood
Even bad wolves can be good
I'll try to be satisfied just to walk close by your side
Maybe you'll see things my way before we get to grandma's place
Little Red Riding Hood
You sure are looking good
You're everything that a big bad wolf could want
Owooooooo I mean baaaaaa!
Baaa?
Baa
The lyrics to "Little Red Riding Hood" by Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs are an iconic retelling of the classic fairy tale. The song opens with the wolf (voiced by lead singer Sam the Sham) spotting Little Red in the woods and noting that she looks good enough to eat. He tries to convince her to let him walk her to her grandma's house, promising to keep her safe from other predators. Little Red is initially hesitant but eventually agrees, though she, too, recognizes the danger in being alone in such a spooky place. The wolf, meanwhile, continues to flirt with her and make suggestive comments about her appearance, even as he insists that he's a good guy at heart. The song ends with Little Red arriving at Grandma's house, still unsure of what to make of the wolf's advances, and the wolf morphing back into his sheepskin disguise.
There are several possible interpretations of the song's lyrics. One common reading is that the wolf represents a sexual predator, with Little Red as his intended victim. The wolf's attempts to charm her and play on her fears echo similar tactics used by real-world abusers. Alternatively, the song can be seen as a commentary on the dangers of trusting strangers, with Little Red ultimately taking matters into her own hands by refusing to let the wolf get too close. Regardless of how listeners interpret the lyrics, "Little Red Riding Hood" remains a catchy and memorable piece of 60s pop-rock, thanks to its sing-along chorus and memorable harmonica riffs.
