Numb
Shane and Caleb Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

i can smell the smoke in my room
i feel the heat on my face but i don't
know where it's coming from
my Best Friend looks at me and says
stop, drop, and roll
i search my skin for flames
this stuff i s getting old
wake up now
lift up your eyes
feel my pain
realize and recognize
i call your name
time has come
you are numb

the hunter coats his knife with
blood one winter's night
licks the blade that takes his life
masked by the elements
his senses unaware
an eternal mistake
that left him lying there

but he did not know
the future his actions foretold

and he did not feel,
the blood that made him real

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Shane and Caleb's song Numb paint a vivid picture of confusion and uncertainty. The opening lines describe a situation where the singer smells smoke in the room but is unsure of the source of the heat. Perhaps more distressing is the fact that the singer's best friend is urging them to stop, drop and roll, suggesting that there may be a fire. Despite this, the singer cannot find any signs of flames on their skin.

The chorus of the song is filled with urgency and a call to action. It implores the listener to wake up, lift up their eyes and recognize the pain that the singer is feeling. The repetition of the words "realize and recognize" emphasize the importance of acknowledging the situation at hand. The lyrics are especially poignant when accompanied by the driving beat and intense guitar riffs that Shane and Caleb are known for.

The second verse of the song tells the story of a hunter who coats his knife with blood one winter's night. He licks the blade that takes his life, and in that moment, he is masked by the elements, his senses unaware. It is an "eternal mistake" that leaves him lying there. It is left to the listener to interpret the implications of this story, but the final lines of the song suggest that the hunter did not know the future that his actions foretold and did not feel the blood that made him real.

The way he recognised his brother's voice is so heartwarming

As if he didn't know his brother was competing. I believe Geoege didn't know, but Kelly knew- and Guy certainly knew (and after rewatching, I'm amending my comment to include Delta, who also knew). All 3 knew him and probably knew in advance that he was competing. It shouldn't be allowed for first-degree relatives of judges to compete, in my opinion. His voice is technically fine, but he lacked something special for me that several others had, like Timothy James Bowen. It takes more than a good voice to be a star, which is why he didn't win the first time, and in my opinion he should stick to being in a band, which would take him down a different path, but one which could still be a successful one. When I listen to him sing without watching him, his voice is forgettable.

@doctor-and-dog didn't look like Kelly knew but Delta knew

It’s EASY. If I ever hear my bro singing, I instantly recognise it’s him, undoubtedly.

Chris was a clear winner early but he still worked his tail off! I would love to see Sapphire again because her voice is majestic as well. One of my favorite performances of the season was the duet of Titanium between the two. Great Job.

Yes, their voices were so compatible rather than being openly competing. Him winning against her so early probably sent her home sooner than her voice deserved.

No, Johnny Manuel won the voice that year in any one’s eyes who has a Brian
