On Shannon LaBrie’s debut album, she kicks off the proceedings by staring
down her demons and admonishing the biggest fears on “Secret,” a retro-R&B
influenced song laced with vibrant horns. The young songwriter comes by her
fears more honestly than most, battling a serious illness at age 9 and losing her
father at 14. She grew up fast, spending several years on a solo journey across
the country, studying philosophy, theology and writing songs. Ensconced in
Nashville now, she’s readying her 12-song January release with plenty of
preceding industry buzz.
Adept on the piano and guitar, the songwriter says she was “raised on James
Taylor and Lauryn Hill.” The title track is a lush and rich plea that would fit
nicely on any contemporary playlist, while her penchant for jazz sings on
“Gettin’ Tired.” Perhaps the song that has gotten the most attention so far is “I
Remember A Boy,” backed by a soulful blues guitar.
For fans of: Lauryn Hill, Carol King, Nora Jones
“…this track affected me. Made me believe like the great singer-songwriters of
yore, maybe this woman has something to say. That in this crazy, mixed-up,
shook-up world she can illuminate her story and people can relate.” Bob
Lefsetz, “The Bob Lefsetz Letter”
“Thick guitar tones, a rich voices and sophisticated songcraft are just the
beginning for this artist, who won us over with her warm, fully realized
recordings…strong vocals in every area and an appealing Grace Potter
essence. ..It’s the co-write ‘I Remember A Boy’ that kills…devastating and
beautiful.”

Take Me
Shannon LaBrie Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I'm conflicted as to which side
On the left is where I came from
On the right is where I want to belong
I feel split down the middle
It's like fire and ice trying to be lovers
There's a warmth inside your stirring
It feels deep and its beckoning
Into a place where you will be
Oh Take Me
Into the light and let me see
I want to go
I want to go
Will you take me
I've been racing after something
Something strong and consuming
I want to make a good choice here
And I swear it will conquer our fears
Oh Take Me
Into a place where you will be
Oh Take Me
Into the light and let me see
I want to go
I want to go
Will you take me
The lyrics to Shannon LaBrie's song "Take Me" express the internal struggle of a person who is standing on a thin line, struggling to decide which side to choose. They are conflicted between where they came from and where they want to belong. The words "I feel split down the middle, it's like fire and ice trying to be lovers" suggests the intensity of the inner struggle that the person is experiencing.
