Flying
Shari Ulrich Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Help me out of this space
I'm crying
And I don't want to lose in the race
Everything we do
Is just another trying
And some never lose
Their fear of flying
The music in those nightclubs
Seldom satisfies my need
For a simple song
The world can sing along
Straight from the heart
Give me my part

Help me out of this space
I'm crying
And I don't want to lose in the race
Everything we do
Is just another trying
And some never lose
Their fear of flying

I went to hear my friends]
Play away the night
And I listened so carefully
You know, the tunes were hot
And the people dancy
But oh, won't you play one for me
Here we go
Touch my soul

Help me out of this space
I'm crying
And I don't want to lose in the race
Everything we do
Is just another trying

And some never lose
Their fear of flying

Overall Meaning

The first verse of this song seems to convey a sense of desperation and hopelessness. The singer is asking for help to climb out of a difficult situation, all while crying and feeling pressured to keep up with everyone else. It seems like the main message is that life feels like an endless competition, with everyone striving for success and trying to be better than the rest. The line "some never lose their fear of flying" suggests that some people are better than others at navigating the challenges of life and emerging victorious.

The second verse seems to express a deep longing for something more than what the singer has been experiencing. She describes going to nightclubs, but finding the music unsatisfying because it doesn't connect with her on a deeper level. She wants something that comes "straight from the heart" and speaks to the human experience in a way that everyone can relate to. When she goes to see her friends play music, she listens intently and asks them to "touch [her] soul" with their music. It seems like she is searching for something meaningful in a world that often feels shallow and competitive.

Overall, this is a song about feeling lost and disconnected from the world around you, but still holding onto hope that there is something more out there. It's a message that many people can relate to, especially in times of uncertainty and turmoil.

THE most under rated singer/songwriter of our generation. I've see her many, many times since I first saw her in the "Soft Rock Cafe" in Vancouver in the early '80's. I saw her a few weeks ago in Nanaimo, BC and she is still getting better with every performance. If you hear she is performing near you.....GO SEE HER!

Wow...Len! Way to make my day!!

Len you took the words right out of my mouth. Shari is a national treasure and we are lucky to have her.

I heard Valdy and the Hometown Band perform in a small venue at Mercer University, Macon Georgia in 1976. Valdy wore a shirt that stated "Disco Sucks". I was a freshman and a guitar player. The performance shaped my musical trajectory--to see such skill and talent, and hear songs with meaning. Much gratitude!

@RobertBenning

When Valdy toured with the Hometown Band and came through North Battleford, I was asked to help load their gear into our school auditorium and got to watch Shari and the entire band from the wings. It was my first concert at 15 years old! I had the pleasure of receiving her beautiful smile and a thank you as they walked off stage after the show and I'll never be able to thank you enough in return for that night! A timeless voice and song, truly inspiring.

I just heard this old song from a very young woman. You are amazing. You were amazing. I am full of admiration and respect for you! Thanks for this early song and all the amazing songs ever since. ❤❤❤

Well it was a life time ago, at the Uni of Alberta in Edmonton and Pied Pumkin played on a wonderful night. I bought every album you had available. In 1979 I moved to Tasmania Australia and still find, in 2022, your music to be as hauntingly beautiful as it was in that tiny citadel on campus all those years ago. Big hug to you across the globe Shari.

@ShariUlrichHere

Oh Robert - what a sweet message to read!! Sending a hug back across the globe!

2009! I followed you guys around the Kootenays way back, doing fotos... This song was SO gorgious! Pied Pumkin was perfect 'in time and place.' And your voice touches me still...
