See exactly what I mean
Every chance you get you seem to
Hurt me more and more
But each hurt makes my mind
Stronger than before
If your memory serves you well
Hey, yeah, I look back on these things
I said before it?s too late
I wonder when you cry
Tell me no lie, is this how you feel?
I wonder when you cry
I tell you no lie, this is how I feel
I'd like to think you'd understand
Now there's someone else holding my hand
You're not the one I love
So don't stand in my way
You know that life for me
Has changed in many ways
If your memory serves you well
We're gonna meet again some day
Hey, yeah, I look back on these things
I said it before it?s too late
I wonder when you cry
Tell me no lie, is this how you feel?
I wonder when you cry
I tell you no lie, this is how I feel
With every chance you get
?Cause every time we met
Oh, you tried to hurt me
Hurt me more and more
If your memory serves you well
We're gonna meet again
I'll look back, I'll look back
I'll look back on these things
I wonder when you cry
Tell me no lie, is this how you feel?
I wonder when you cry
I tell you no lie, this is how I feel
I wonder when you cry
Tell me no lie, is this how you feel?
I wonder when you cry
I tell you no lie, this is how I feel
I'll look back on these things
I'll look back on these things
I'll look back on these things
The lyrics to Sharleen Spiteri's song "I Wonder" are about a past relationship that has ended, but still lingers in the minds of both parties. The singer is reflecting on their former partner’s actions and how it led to the demise of the relationship. They are calling on their ex to be honest about their feelings and not lie about how much they actually care. The singer acknowledges that every time they interact with their ex, they are hurt more and more, but every hurt makes them stronger. They then explain how their ex needs to understand that they have moved on and are with someone else, and they can't stand in the way of their happiness. The song then circles back to the idea that they wonder if their ex truly understands the impact they had on their former relationship and if they really feel as deeply as they claim to.
The chorus is a repetition of the singer's wondering about their ex's emotions when they cry. It's plausible that the person is crying due to the loss of a relationship that they didn't actually want to lose, or maybe they're only crying because they feel badly that they caused someone else pain. The singer is attempting to understand the meaning behind the ex's tears by wondering if they feel the same pain the singer feels or if they are just being insincere.
Overall, the lyrics of "I Wonder" are melancholic and reflective, with a tinge of optimism that comes from moving on from a former partner. The song's meaning can be hard to grasp, but with the right interpretation, it can lead to fascinating conversations about past relationships and the lingering effects they have.
