One Day
Sharon Van Etten Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

One day, you'll be on your own
You won't have a shout any more
One day, you'll be in the ground
You're over and out, and
You've missed the last tube home

One day, you'll be on your own
You won't have a shout any more
One day, you'll be in the ground
You're over and out, and
You've missed the last tube home

Woke up this morning, heard someone snoring
Knobheads going on about modern life is boring
Bears have their own music, no-one can prove it
Just like I'm a guy of guys
You think I'm gonna move it

One day, you'll be on your own
You won't have a shout any more
One day, you'll be in the ground
You're over and out, and
You've missed the last tube home

Sum up together, nobody's the wiser
It's life in the sunshine, that's what I would advise her

One day, you'll be on your own
You won't have a shout any more
One day, you'll be in the ground
You're over and out, and
You've missed the last tube home

One day, you'll be on your own
You won't have a shout any more
One day, you'll be in the ground
You're over and out, and
You've missed the last tube home

Woo!
Yeeh-ha!

One day, you'll be on your own
You won't have a shout any more
One day, you'll be in the ground

You're over and out, and
You've missed the last tube home

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Sharon Van Etten's song "One Day" suggest an overall theme of mortality, change, and the inevitable passage of time. The repetition of the lines "One day, you'll be on your own / You won't have a shout anymore / One day, you'll be in the ground / You're over and out, and you've missed the last tube home" emphasizes the idea that everyone eventually faces death and that this is a truth that can't be ignored. The line "Woke up this morning, heard someone snoring / Knobheads going on about modern life is boring" signifies the mundanity of daily life in comparison to the grander ideas of life and death that the rest of the song touches upon.

The line "Bears have their own music, no one can prove it / Just like I'm a guy of guys, you think I'm gonna move it" is a bit more mysterious, but can be interpreted as Sharon Van Etten contemplating the existence of intangible and unproven things such as one's personality or self-identity. The final lines of "Sum up together, nobody's the wiser / It's life in the sunshine, that's what I would advise her" implies a kind of acceptance or even resignation in the face of mortality. Overall, the song seems to be saying that change is inevitable and that one should strive to live as fully and authentically as possible in the limited time they have.

Sister don't mind that I'm not on time
She knows that I'm through with that
Sick of trying, don't like mine

Mama still love and daddy still love
They know that I'm here like that
Unlike mine, true and kind

Call me outside and I will now be
And I will be fine with that
You don't leave me now, you might love me back
Distance is fine, I know you can care
And nothing is big like that
You don't see me now, I don't see you back

[Chorus]
One day I'll be fine with that
One day I'll be fine with that
One day I'll be fine with that
You don't leave me now, do you love me back?

Just to remind you, I'm a mistake
How come you don't want to know
You don't want to see, you don't want to show

Kicking myself, I know that you're tough
Yeah, we can pretend we're that
Gotta see how, you gotta leave that
[Chorus]
One day I'll be fine with that
One day I'll be fine with that
One day I'll be fine with that
You don't leave me now, do you love me back?

Snow is outside but I'm by your fire
I feel all the love you bring
You gotta see how we can see this out
Summer in mind and spring by your side
We'll see all the love we'll keep
Gotta see that we can be that

[Chorus]
One day I'll be fine with that
One day I'll be fine with that
One day I'll be fine with that
You don't leave me now, do you love me back? (x4)

Just heard this great song (that grabbed me immediately) for the first time which played at the end of the film "Moving On". So many talented artists out there "that are under the radar" from "mainstream radio music". The best music, by far, are little gems like this. I'm just an old Grams that has always loved music, and love to discover these "special artists" like Sharon Van Etten....a girl and her guitar, and talented songwriter to boot!!!

I agree!! Heard it on that movie tonight and had to find out who sings it. She has a beautiful, soulful voice. I’m her new fan from now on.

I thought I was the only one who felt this .. when I’m sad and grieving, I put this on and out of nowhere I get up and the room becomes the dance floor I sing and dance the tears away to.
