She is most famous for being the lead singer and one of the songwriters in the Dutch symphonic rock band Within Temptation. Sharon lives with Robert Westerholt, the guitarist of Within Temptation. The couple have a daughter, Eva Luna (b. 2005) and son Robin Aiden (b. 2009).

Together with Robert she set up the band Within Temptation in 1996. Since then Robert plays guitar, did the male vocals with Sharon performing the female vocals.

Her vocals play a major role in the band's sound, but she "never really had vocal training, I taught myself just listening and practicing songs I liked myself".
