They were formed in 2003 as guitarist/songwriter Jim Bower plus bassist brother Rick, keyboard player Chris Minz and drummer Dick Sharp came out of retirement with no plan except to be as good as possible. They have recently been joined by Sarah Niven and 'Planet' Claire Gibbons on backing vocals.

The reason there would be ELEVEN churches at Lalibela instead of twelve for each of the Apostles is because of ONE LESS, excluding the traitor Juda. Similarly, in the "Apocalypsis of John", the tribe of Dan is excluded from the list of the gates for each of the Twelve Tribes. "DAN" in Hebrew means "judge", so the JUDGEMENT on the Traitor is that he is EXCLUDED from the gates of the "Heavenly Jerusalem". Thus, he did not have a church built in his honor at Lalibela.
The Crosses on the walls of the churches ARE NOT the Cross of the Templards. The Templard Cross was a ➕with four little crosses at each of the "arms" (the two lateral ones being sideways and the bottom one upside down) making five in all, in a shape known as the "Quinotaur". It is also known as the "Jerusalem Cross" and is used as the logo/emblem of the "Jerusalem Bible" edition of the "sacred scriptures". The Cross carved on the churches is the "Cross Patee" or spread-end MALTESE Cross of the Knights (of St. JOHN) Hospitaler; then also known as the "Knights of Rhodes" as today they are known as the "Knights of Malta" since they moved to that island as their headquarters in the thirteenth century after the loss of the "Holy Land" to the Moslems. And Rhodes is on the DIRECT sea route alignment (through Egypt) to ETHIOPIA!! Though refugee Templars were subsumed into that Order after the abolition of their own by the pope in 1312, they would not have been a significant quantity to change the character of the Hospitalers which, as their name implies, were dedicated to establishing Christian hospitals for religious pilgrims.
The patron saint of the Order to whom it was dedicated however, St. JOHN (Mark) of Jerusalem, in whose mother MARY's home Simon Peter and James and other members of the early Church sought shelter from the persecuting Jewish Sanhedrin according to the "Acts of the Apostles", IS SIGNificant in regard to the "Prester JOHN" legend possibly INSPIRING the construction of the churches! His realm was variously denoted in the ancient sources as being in either Persia, India, or ETHIOPIA!! In ancient times, the area of western Arabia (Yemen) and eastern Africa up to Dhjibouti (the region of the so-called "Horn of Africa") was geographically termed "West India" to distinguish it from the India of the East. They were considered to BOTH be the "side ends" of the ENTIRETY of "India" straddling what is STILL called the "Indian Ocean". As well as "Central India" (Persia), this of course would have INCLUDED Ethiopia. "Prester John" was supposed to have ruled over a fabulous kingdom of riches and prosperous BUT pious people. VERY interesting coincidence that it was an Ethiopian KING who had been staying in Jerusalem who decided to go back and build these churches; though UNlike the video's NON-Ethiopian "scholar" claimed, the name of the place ("Lalibela" DOES NOT mean "KING" in any Ethiopic language. The word for "king" in Geez, the official national language, is "EZGA" (like the Arabic word "AKSA" meaning "Great") and in the ethnic language of Amharic it is "NEGUS", derived from the ancient Egyptian word "NAGA" for the Pharoahonic cobra. HOWEVER, "JANHOY" is the Amharic word meaning "Gracious" like the English used to address their nobles with as "Your GRACE", (derived from the Hebrew "YANNA") and used of the Emperor, or "KING of Kings", and therefore THAT word COULD have been interpreted by Europeans as the name "JOHN"; though it was a descriptive and NOT a personal name. "Prester" in Old English of course meant "Priest", and since the concept of "emperorship" COMBINES the sacred role of PRIEST with the secular role of KING", the moniker would in effect have meant "PRIEST KING". Whether he returned with former Templard stonemasons is of course unknown, as THEY would NOT have been allowed to remain in Palestine after its REconquest by the Moslems in 1291 and we don't known under what circumstances this king returned to Ethiopia from Palestine. But "LALABeLa" (which in Hebrew could mean "The Lord God") would be the "New Zion" of this Ethiopian "Melchizedek"! And THERE MAY BE a connection with the Church of St. MARY of Zion at Aksum, the ancient capital of the Ethiopian emperors, which according to the seminal research of Graham Hancock DOES reputedly HOLD the ORIGINAL "Ark of the Covenant!!! The St. MARY would NOT be the "Virgin Mary" mother of Jesus; but "MARY MAGDALENE", who some scholars think was MARY the mother of JOHN Mark of Jerusalem whose house was near the TOWER of the Pool of SILOAM and that SHE was the SISTER of the Virgin Mary referred to in the "Gospels" as "SALOME"!! THIS relationship would make her the wife of Cleophas and JOHN Mark the NEPHEW of JESUS CHRIST!! The "Lukan Gospel" mentions the "TOWER of SILOAM" (supposedly near the Pool) that fell on the "sinful" Jews. BUT, as always, there are problems here.
Archaeology so far indicates there WAS NO tower near the Pool of SILOAM, and the Ophel Ridge (on the western side of which it is situated) WAS NOT walled in THEN any more then it is NOW, which is why there is NO outline of a wall from LATER times encompassing it as there is the rest of the ancient area of Jerusalem.
Another detail is that Mary SALOME, of the "Three Mary's" at the Cross and the tomb, is NEVER identified in the "Gospels" as being MARY Magdalene and, in fact, COULDN'T have been IF she was one of the "THREE MARY'S", the other two being of course the "Virgin Mother" Mary and Mary the MAGDALENE!! Which is why others, such as St. Bernard one of the CREATORS of the Knights TEMPLARD Order, supposed that she was MARY of Bethany, the sister of Martha and Lazarus; who are all described in the "JOHN Gospel" as being the "BELOVED" of Jesus. AND from all Christian tradition indications, Mary Magdalene was Jesus' FAVORITE FEMALE disciple.
And ANOTHER detail, indicating that MARY the mother of John MARK was NONE OTHER than the WIFE of SIMON PETER the "Chief Apostle", is that in one of the two canonical epistles of Peter he refers to "my BELOVED SON MARK"! Which WOULD EXPLAIN why in the opening chapters of the "Acts of the Apostles" he appears so FREQUENTLY with JOHN MARK and when ONE is no longer mentioned in the text NEITHER is the OTHER!!
But NEITHER MARY matter either, because NEITHER had anything even allegorically to do with the "Ark of the Covenant". The ONE that DID was the "VIRGIN Mother MARY", who was the "ARK" who gave birth to the "NEW Covenant" of JESUS CHRIST; as she was regarded by the medieval Roman Catholic Church and even LABELED as such on Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris!! And the prophet Isaiah spoke of the "VIRGIN Daughter of ZION". And let's not forget the numerous "Old Testament" mentions of the "🪨of Zion"; and the churches are CARVED OUT of solid 🪨!!There is obviously a CONFLATION of identities here, as there usually is in LEGENDS. 42:18
