After accepting Christ in sixth grade, Groves developed a passion for excellence in every aspect of his life. He dedicated himself to practice his music with a newfound intensity, which resulted in his catapult from last chair to first chair in the school band within months. Groves' drive and determination would eventually lead him to attend and graduate from Baylor University with a bachelor's degree in music composition on a full-ride private music scholarship.
The enthusiasm that drove Groves to excel at music was also evident in his overwhelming eagerness to share his new relationship with Christ. That eagerness was exhibited through his work at the Methodist Children's Home while in college and his current volunteer youth work at his home congregation of First Baptist Church in Franklin, Tennessee.
Groves' music and ministry are tightly entwined in his life. In fact, his straightforward and inspiring lyrics have proved to be useful even to his church pastor, who has often used Groves' songs in tandem with his sermons. Many of the songs on the album were written specifically for this purpose, drawing listeners to Christ's message of hope and redemption and challenging them to action.
Soon after college graduation Groves moved to Nashville, married his college sweetheart and landed a job with a music publisher in one month's time. His job with the publishing company eventually led to a development deal with the publisher and a record deal with Rocketown Records in 2000.

Chorus
Christ have mercy. Lord have mercy. Holy Healer. Stength within. Pass me not. Forsake me not, Lord. Amen.
my enemies are whispering. thay pray my name may die. so few to trust, so few are just. I cry to You tonight
Christ have mercy. Lord have mercy. Faithful Brother. Closest Friend. Pass me not. Forsake me not, Lord. Amen, Amen.
my heart is dim, it's always been. I turn from what is right. passions of youth tear me from truth. I cry to you tonight.
Chorus
Christ have mercy. Lord have Mercy. Sinless Savior. Judge of Men. Pass me not. forsake me not, Lord. Amen, Amen.
The lyrics of "Amen" by Shaun Groves depict a person who is struggling with various issues - physical, emotional, and spiritual. The weight of toil, trouble, fears, and fights has taken a toll on the person's body. Sickness is also present, and the world is against them. Despite this, the person cries out to God for mercy and healing. They implore Christ to have mercy, and they acknowledge Him as the Holy Healer and the source of strength.
The second verse of the song implies that the person also faces opposition from their enemies. The enemies are hoping for the person's downfall and whispering against them. The person feels betrayed by those they trusted and sees few people as just. Again, they cry to God, asking for mercy and acknowledging Christ as their faithful brother and closest friend.
The third verse reveals that the person's heart is also struggling as it is constantly drawn towards sinful desires. The passions of their youth have led them astray from the truth. Once again, they beseech God for mercy and acknowledge Christ as the sinless Savior and Judge of all men. The song ends with a repeated refrain of the chorus, where the person prays to God, imploring Him not to forsake them.
