Soldier
Shawn Hlookoff Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Some people say, I'm a fighter
Some people hate what I do
I stand for my country
I stand for you

I got a family that loves me
They respect what I do
Try telling your child you're leaving
Believe me it's a hard thing to do

So, If I die don't judge me
Cause, I will not judge you
And If I die, please accept it
Cause, I will die for you

We have our reasons
Rules, morals and beliefs
I won't slander your opinion
I'm just searching for peace

So, If I die don't judge me
Cause, I will not judge you

And If I die, please accept it
Cause, I will die for you

Overall Meaning

In Shawn Hlookoff's song "Soldier," the lyrics are an expression of the inner thoughts and emotions of a soldier who is often misunderstood and judged by others. The opening lines, "Some people say, I'm a fighter, Some people hate what I do," reveal the conflicting views that people may have towards soldiers and the roles they play in war. Despite this, the soldier proudly proclaims their dedication and loyalty to their country and to the listener: "I stand for my country, I stand for you."

The second verse delves deeper into the personal struggles faced by soldiers, particularly the difficult task of leaving their loved ones behind. The line "Try telling your child you're leaving, Believe me it's a hard thing to do" emphasizes the emotional toll soldiers endure, having to say goodbye to their families and sacrificing personal happiness for a greater cause. The soldier recognizes the potential for judgment but pleads for understanding and acceptance, stating "If I die, don't judge me, Cause I will not judge you."

Through the lyrics, Hlookoff highlights the soldier's commitment to their duty while also promoting empathy and peace. The soldier acknowledges that everyone has their reasons, beliefs, and opinions, but expresses the desire to find common ground and mutual respect: "I won't slander your opinion, I'm just searching for peace." Ultimately, the song's message is centered on the soldier's willingness to sacrifice their life for the greater good and the call for others to honor and accept that sacrifice.

still one of the most powerful remembrance day songs ever. I play this every year for my music students and history students; for very different reasons, but it is still very moving.

this song is amazing. last year, during our school's rememberance day asembely, the school's drama club put together a silent presentation to this song that had the entire school in tears. it has stuck with me all year. it shows that good music can sometimes be even more powerful than words.

Most moving remembrance day song ever written. My hearts go out to all the soliders and peacekeepers fighting for freedom in our countries. May all the dedicated men and woman rest in peace. I feel for the families going through this pain and agony.

i first heard this song in 2006 when i was singing in the choir for my high school's rememberance day assembly. 4 times in a row i heard this song, and though i have no personal affiliation with the situation, it still brought me to tears every time, and i've been a shawn hlookoff fan ever since. i hope people still watch this video and remember how lucky we are to be free :) love ya shawn!

Knowing everything I learned this year in History about World War 1 & 2, for the first time in my life, I cried at the Rememberance Day ceremony. I'm so sorry they had to lose their lives.
