Shawn teased this song months before the album release after sharing a snippet on his Snapchat and Instagram story. He says it’s about a one night stand that may be based on his real life experiences.
On a Twitter Q&A before the album officially released, Shawn confessed that “Where Were You in the Morning?” was one of his proudest songs and his favorite song to perform on the album.
Like many of the songs on the album, "Where Were You in the Morning?" is a collaboration with Teddy Geiger, Geoff Warbuton and Scott Harris. It was during the penning of the soulful tune in 2017 that Shawn discovered how to hit the high notes that he uses during the record.
"Technically... last year, I couldn't sing falsetto," he told Entertainment Weekly: "I figured out how to the day I wrote Where Were You In the Morning. You never discover you sing falsetto again; you just do, once. You never discover you can say a certain thing again; you just do."
Where Were You in the Morning?

Why you gotta get my hopes up?
You said that you were staying over
But then I woke up to the cold air
How could you make me believe?
That there was something in between you and me, yeah
I look around and I don't see you
Where were you in the morning, baby? (Baby?)
You didn't leave your number for me
Left me without a warning, waitin' (waitin')
Where were you in the morning, baby?
How do you, how do you just walk away? (Away)
How do you, how do you just walk away? (Walk away)
And I thought you really felt this
When we were talking about breakfast
You made it seem like we connected
I guess I just didn't expect this
How could you make me believe? (Believe)
That there was something in between you and me, yeah (oh)
I look around and I don't see you
Where were you in the morning, baby? (Baby?)
You didn't leave your number for me
Left me without a warning, waitin'
I said where were you in the morning, baby?
How do you, how do you just walk away?
Where were, where were you?
How do you, how do you just walk away?Where were, where were you?
And I hope you had a good reason
'Cause I know you had a good time
And I'm looking up at the ceiling
And I keep wondering why (why)
Where were you in the morning, baby?
(Where were you in the morning?)
You didn't leave your number for me
(Didn't leave your number)
Left me without a warning, waitin'
Left me without a warning
I said, where were you in the morning baby?
(Where were you in the morning?)
How do you, how do you just walk away?
Where were, where were you?
How do you, how do you just walk away?
Where were, where were you? (Walk away)
How do you, how do you just walk away?
Where were, where were you? (Walk away)
How do you, how do you just walk away?
Where were, where were you?
How?

In Shawn Mendes's song Where Were You in the Morning?, the singer expresses his frustration about a girl who had a one-night stand and then left without a trace. He reflects on the previous night when he thought they had a genuine connection, but upon waking up to the cold air, he realizes that she had left without even leaving a phone number. He questions how she could make him believe that there was something between them and then abandon him without warning.
Throughout the lyrics, he reveals that he expected more from this girl, and he believed that they had a deeper connection than just a one-night stand. He feels hurt and confused about her sudden departure, especially after she had made it seem like they had something special while talking about breakfast. He wonders how she could just walk away without any explanation, which leaves him staring at the ceiling, feeling lost and alone.
Overall, the song conveys the emotional pain of a one-night stand gone wrong, leaving the singer feeling betrayed and heartbroken. Despite the song's sad lyrics, the catchy melody and Shawn Mendes's smooth vocals make it an enjoyable listen.
