Baby Blue
Shawn Mullins Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I can see the pictures of me and ask
"Do I look so different than anyone else?"
I can hear them marching near and feel

The steady pounding of a heart.
With every step this open door
A mission for a love lost long ago.
I welcome its return.
Years gone by, no time to cry a prayer for me
As I watch my bridges burn.

I was like you, I never knew
How I could be a victim of our red, white, and blue.
I work the day, I earn my pay,

I want to find a way back to my baby blue.

I still can see pictures of me and ask
"Do I look so different than anyone else?"

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Shawn Mullins's song Baby Blue convey a sense of introspection and longing for a lost love. The singer can see pictures of himself and wonder if he looks any different than anyone else. This line suggests that despite feeling lonely and lost, he recognizes that his experiences are not entirely unique. He can also hear the sounds of a marching band and feel the beating of his own heart. This imagery creates a sense of anticipation for something important that he hopes will redeem the past.

The singer describes an open door that represents a new opportunity to find the love he lost long ago. He welcomes this chance to start again and reclaim his happiness. However, he also acknowledges the passage of time and the bridges he has burned. His past mistakes and regrets have led him to this point, where he must work hard to earn his way back to his ideal life. The lyrics suggest a sense of determination and a willingness to take responsibility for his actions.

Overall, Baby Blue tells a poignant story of a man searching for redemption and reclaiming lost love. The lyrics touch on themes of regret, hope, and the desire for a fresh start.

As a teen I spent years in a fairly traumatizing Psychiatric group home, my parents gave me up. My roommate used to sing this to me when I was scared and we were falling asleep. A small act of kindness that still makes me loved when I hear it 20 years later.

Fake

@@halwakka504 Not fake, unfortunately. From 1997 to 2002 I was in a group home in Leesburg Virginia and then one in Louisville, TN. I was barely 13 when they gave me up.

@@TheMaiah13 I'm ok now, this was back in 1997 right after my 13th birthday. So a long time ago, but this song brings me back. That act of kindness and friendship meant alot to me during an otherwise awful time.

@@justineglickman thats good to hear! Take care. That year was also traumatic for me as I was in an abusive relationship at that time. Were survivors! Wish you all the best.
